The Knife Set I’m Getting My Mom for Mother’s Day

My mom is incredible. Growing up, she stayed home with my brothers and me, and worked hard to create a beautiful home that pulsed with happiness. Every holiday felt magical because of her festive decorating and contagious joy. Her tables were beautifully set with perfectly coordinated color schemes and sentimental vintage dishes and glassware. For all her domestic talents, though, there was one task she never quite warmed to — cooking. Sure, she had her staples, and her chocolate chip cookies, to this day, are unparalleled. But cooking was never her favorite thing to do.

These days, though, things have changed, and I like to think I had a big part in that. Whenever my mom comes over, she can be found in my kitchen, checking out any new cooking tools or gadgets I’ve discovered. Her favorite tool is my trusty knife set from Schmidt Brothers, and I am so excited to get her a set this Mother’s Day, and here’s why.

Schmidt Brothers 5-Piece Natural White Oak Hex Knife Set

When I enrolled in culinary school 15 years ago, my mom’s interest in cooking started to pique ever so slightly. Her love for me and genuine interest in my passions built a bridge between a task she used to do out of necessity and one she could genuinely enjoy.

One of the first things she learned is something most home cooks eventually discover: a good set of knives is a must. High-quality, sharp knives can transform even the most reluctant cook into a confident one — and my mom is proof.

My Schmidt Brothers knife set is not only beautiful, with its modern-meets-classic wood and acrylic block, but also includes some of the best knives I’ve ever used. The blades are made from 100% German stainless steel, so they’re razor-sharp and precise. The gorgeous handles feel balanced and comfortable in the hand, on par with high-end knives that cost a lot more.

The set includes everything both my mom and I need for everyday cooking: an 8-inch chef knife, 8-inch bread knife, 5-inch utility knife, and a 4-inch paring knife.

No, my mom’s not going to start shaping tourné potatoes or chiffonading anytime soon. But she does appreciate the quality, sharpness, and comfort of these knives for dicing onions or slicing bread. And I love them because they make even the most advanced knife cuts feel effortless. These knives are truly the best Mother’s Day gift for the mom in your life who loves to cook — even if she doesn’t know it yet.
