Elle Fanning Follows an Old-School Fashion Rule

While we love to break fashion rules (black and navy do go together, and you can wear white after Labor Day, thank you very much!), Elle Fanning knows that sometimes they’re here for a reason. The actor turned out one of the most time-honored sartorial commandments on a walk through New York City yesterday.

She wore a pair of relaxed, cropped blue jeans, a light khaki button-up and a cozy oatmeal-colored sweater draped over her shoulders, which she matched to her nude socks. But her most intentional coordination came to her accessories, underscoring the old rule of matching bags to shoes. Fanning, another celebrity fan of The Row, toted the brand’s Margaux bag, a mahogany top-handle purse with a belted closure, which she carried alongside a Prada shopping bag. Her shiny, tasseled burgundy-brown loafers from Santoni caught the warm tones of her bag. Always a fashion overachiever, Fanning also matched the tinted lenses of her oversized aviators to her accessories. While that’s not a part of the old-school rule, we certainly appreciate the attention to detail.

The actor is known for her classic, minimal, and chic personal style—see: her top-notch suiting, affinity for French fashion, and pristine track record of Met Gala looks. It’s really no surprise that Elle Fanning nailed such a timeless look.
