How To Smell Like Taylor Swift’s Friends (Weed and Little Babies)

Late last night, Taylor Swift gifted (and semi-surprised) us with The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, a double album filled with lyrics that were less Easter egg, more cracking the shell into what her life is like. Some of the more obvious lyrics featured on “Florida!!!,” a collaboration with Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine.

“My friends all smell like weed or little babies / and the city reeks of driving myself crazy” Swift croons, revealing an interesting olfactive palette that would render any Uber drive simply nauseating.

Inspired by this peek into her famous “squad”—members include Blake Lively, Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, and Hugh Jackman—here’s how to smell like weed, little babies, and a bonus option: The City.

Weed

Though it may seem subversive to smell like pot, cannabis is actually a common note used in the fragrance world. If you’re looking to go literal, the most iconic weed-related scent may be Malin + Goetz’s Cannabis Eau de Parfum. The notes are earthy and warm—more plant, less bong water—the sophisticated and adult version of toking. Byredo’s limited-edition Open Sky and Boy Smells’s Cowboy Kush are more creative translations of the scent. Even fashion house-turned-fragrance brands Dries Van Noten and Loewe have their own versions of weed scents. The former, Cannabis Patchouli, comes in a stunning green glass and dark wood bottle. Loewe’s take is a little more cheeky: named Scent of Marihuana, it only comes in candles and room sprays.

Little Babies

Let’s start with the literal: Dior’s Baby Dior—which has an alcohol-free water perfume. The scent, revived from a vintage 1970s line, is a soft floral with notes of pear, rose, and cotton. To smell figuratively like a “little baby?” Now that’s actually subversive. Trendy fragrance note vanilla is the major scent note of breast milk—try Prada’s Infusion de Vanille Eau de Parfum for a cult classic or Pafums de Marley for something a bit more unusual.

My favorite little baby, my niece Milly, simply smells clean—I would compare it to Dedcool’s Milk Enhancer, Santa Maria Novella’s Iris fragrance, and of course, the ultimate skin scent Glossier You.

The City

There have been countless fragrances dedicated to New York City: Bond No. 9 has built an entire business on the idea and has a scent to accompany practically every neighborhood and designer Gabriela Hearst has a scent inspired by New York as well. As somebody who has lived here for 8 years, I have to be honest—New York doesn’t particularly smell fantastic. But there are certain notes worth calling out: Le Labo’s new Tubereuse 40 is their dedicated city scent (though arguably sister-scent Santal 33 was the unofficial fragrance of NY through the entire 2010s) or niche perfume house 19-69 has notes of concrete in L’air Barbes.
