Two dead, 7 injured in Miami outdoor mall shooting

Two people have died and seven were injured in a shooting early Saturday at an outdoor mall in Doral, Fla., local authorities said.

“The preliminary information that we do have from investigators is that there was some type of a dispute or altercation amongst patrons at a local facility within this commercial establishment,” Detective Alvaro Zabaleta of the Miami-Dade Police Department said in a press conference, referring to the late-night shooting that occurred at a club around 3:30 a.m. at the CityPlace Doral mall.

Zabaleta then said a security guard who was on the job intervened and sustained a fatal gunshot wound. He said “[o]fficers that were working the commercial establishment at the time immediately responded” and an “exchange of gunfire” occurred, with an officer getting shot in “the lower extremity” and the gunman getting shot and killed.

“At the present time, we do know that two officers of the city of Doral Police Department did discharge their firearm, but as I mentioned, only one was injured by gunfire,” Zabaleta said.

Zabaleta also said six people were struck by gunfire, one woman and five men. He said two of the people injured were in “critical condition” and were at trauma centers.

According to Doral Police Chief Edwin Lopez, the investigation into the shooting is a “multi-agency investigation” between the Doral Police Department, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FLDE) and the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD).

“This is [an] extremely disappointing day in our South Florida community,” Lopez said at a press conference. “Anytime a law enforcement officer is shot, it tears at the core fabric of our community. But we are grateful that he is alive and in stable condition.”
