My husband, Rob, and I recently spent 2 months pet-sitting in Bath and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The city itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is full of captivating history. It’s also home to two universities and a thriving tourism industry. There’s always plenty going on and there are lots of romantic things to do in Bath for couples.

Bath dates back to the Roman times, when spas and temples were built around the area’s natural hot springs. Many monuments and historically significant features remain to this day and make Bath a similar experience to exploring some of the more famous historical cities in Europe.

Best Romantic Things To Do in Bath for Couples

The time I spent in Bath with my husband was amazing. Although both originally from the UK, we hadn’t been back to our home country for a couple of years. It was nice to experience British life again whilst feeling every day like we were on a romantic European city vacation.

1. Prosecco River Cruise

Number 1 on my list of top romantic things to do in Bath has to be a river cruise with a glass of Prosecco in hand. Bath sits on the beautiful Avon River, a delightful addition to the cityscape of the town center. You can walk along its banks, cross over several ornate bridges, or enjoy the sights from the water.

A 1-hour river cruise is a great way to see the city from a different view. The tranquil river route takes in a number of Baths’ most beautiful sights and the peaceful, natural scenery of the river in one sitting. 2. Sunset Bath Skyline Hike

There are several romantic things to do around Bath. Hiking in the scenic green countryside that encompasses it, is one of them. The Bath Skyline Trail runs the circumference of the city and is around 7.5 miles long. It can be joined at many access points and shortened for those who don’t want to walk the entire distance.

The hike itself incorporates many breathtaking views of Bath. From the high vantage point, you’ll look down over the spires of the Abbey and get a panoramic view of the architecture of the city.

My advice would be to climb Widcombe Hill on the southeast side of the city in the early evening. Pick up signs for the Bath Skyline Trail and enjoy the sunset over the city. You’ll often see hot air balloons flying high at this time too, which add to the majesty of the view.

3. Guided City Tour and a Trip to the Roman Baths

One of the most romantic things to do in Bath for couples is to wander around the city itself, exploring the streets lined with history dating back to the time of the Romans. One of the most fun things to do in Bath for couples is to visit Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein, a tribute to Mary Shelley the English novelist. This immersive museum about her life and works is an interesting, cultural, and exciting attraction that couples can enjoy together.

Many people are unaware that the majority of the writer’s most famous novel, Frankenstein, was written in Bath in the early 19th century. 5. The Botanist Bar & Restaurant

My husband and I aren’t really fans of fancy meals out, but during a visit from some friends, we dined at one of the most romantic restaurants in Bath. The spectacular Botanist Bar & Restaurant is visually stunning and the service is outstanding. It’s situated within a huge building, and as the name suggests, is filled with gorgeous flowers and plant life.

The restaurant is set over two floors with a second-floor balcony level that looks over the floor below. The lighting and ambiance are perfect for a romantic dinner and the food is fantastic. I had a sirloin steak but everybody else had one of the Botanist’s famous hanging kebabs.

We also enjoyed some unique cocktails before eating. My Thai Chilli Crush came with a giant red chili pepper in it and was so good I had to have another.

6. The Jane Austen Centre

Another of the culturally significant things to do in Bath during a romantic weekend is a visit to the Jane Austen Centre. The novelist famed for writing one of the most romantic novels of all time – Pride and Prejudice – is considered one of Bath’s most famous former residents.

Bath’s oldest theater-style venue originally opened its doors in 1934 as a cinema but now hosts all varieties of live entertainment. There’s always something on, but you may be fortunate enough to catch a band or show you love during your stay.

9. Enjoy a Spa Day

No romantic trip to Bath would be complete without a visit to the spa. You’re not able to experience the natural thermal water at the famous Roman Baths but you certainly can at Thermae Bath Spa.

With an open-air rooftop pool, you can enjoy the naturally warm, mineral-rich waters whilst taking in some spectacular views over the city of Bath. The indoor Minerva bath has beautiful flowing curves and grand columns, and the thermal waters are accented by a revitalizing whirlpool.

2-hour daytime and extra romantic twilight packages are available to book online. It’s not as expensive as you might think for such a romantic experience. They also offer a range of beauty and relaxation treatments and have a lovely cafe for light bites and drinks.

11. Catch a Film in a Tiny Retro Cinema

One of the most romantic cinemas I’ve ever been to was the Little Theatre in Bath. Originally opened in 1935, the theater is home to two small auditoriums and shows a mix of the latest blockbusters as well as retro movies. It hasn’t changed much during its 88 years and retains a lot of 1930s charm. The main screen even features the original balcony seating.

You can buy snacks, drinks, beers, and wine from the cute kiosk downstairs to enhance your show. We went to watch Oppenheimer and it was a truly unique movie experience.

It’s located just a few minutes walk from the city center and shows films throughout the day, 7 days a week. I highly recommend you catch a film here during your stay.

12. Happy-Hour Cocktails

Any romantic weekend must include cocktails right? One of the most fun things to do in Bath for couples is to partake in some of the great drink deals on offer. Two of my favorite spots for cocktails are Tapas Revolution and Las Iguanas.

Tapas Revolution offers two glasses of sangria, select cocktails, and gin and tonics for £10 ($12) every day from 4 pm-6 pm. It has a really nice indoor setting and bar area that make you feel like you’re on a Spanish vacation. It also has a small outdoor patio which is great for people-watching and the tapas dishes are excellent.

Las Iguanas has two-for-one cocktails, all day every day. The popular chain of restaurants is known for its delicious Latin-American dishes and great deals on drinks. It also has a large patio area that sits in a pretty courtyard.

13. Take a Day Trip to Bradford-on-Avon

The whole reason for selecting Bath as a 2-month pet-sitting destination came after a Christmas trip 5 years ago. My husband and I stayed nearby in the lovely town of Bradford-on-Avon and we fell in love with the entire area.

Just 8 miles from the center of Bath and easily accessible via public transport, Bradford-on-Avon is a charming little town. It has several quaint cafes, tea rooms, shops, and pubs as well as numerous buildings that date back to the 17th century. Much like Bath, its origins are traced back to Roman times, and the well-preserved and extensive history really shows.

Visiting the town town feels like stepping back in time and the bridge that cuts over the river is rather spectacular. It’s a wonderful place to spend a few hours exploring. All romantic breaks in Bath should include a stop in Bradford-on-Avon.

One of the most romantic shows ever was filmed extensively in Bath. If you were a fan of the hit Netflix show Bridgerton you’ll be happy to learn that you can take a guided walking tour of many of the filming locations around the city.

From the exteriors of Featherington’s home and Lady Danbury’s house to the quaint Gunter’s Tea Shop, you’ll see all of the major shooting locations from the first and second series.

15. Cozy Up Down The Pub

Bath is home to many great pubs, and some of them date back centuries. After a day of sightseeing and tours be sure to take time to cuddle up in a quiet spot at any number of Bath’s inviting public houses. Two of my favorites, which are great for a romantic drink or two, are the Saracens Head and the Coeur De Lion.

The Saracens Head is thought to be the oldest pub in Bath dating back to 1713. Its wooden beam ceilings, cute nooks, and original horseshoe bar create a delightful setting to sample a few traditional ales.

The Coeur de Lion is thought to be the smallest pub in Bath. The Victorian bar with its stained glass windows is smaller than your average living room but is a great place to snuggle up in and rejuvenate with a few drinks.

Next, explore the stunning Bath Abbey. If you don’t have time to go inside the Abbey itself, you can still enjoy its impressive facade from the outside. Get out on the water with a Prosecco river cruise and see the city from a completely different perspective. Be sure to make you’re way up Widcombe Hill where you can pick up the Bath Skyline Trail. Time it with sunset for some spectacular views over the city as the sun goes down. An evening meal at The Botanist is a must at least once during your stay.

There’s always plenty going on at The Forum, Bath’s oldest theater-style venue, so be sure to catch a show. The Little Theatre is a 1930s cinema that shows a range of new blockbusters and old films, so load up with snacks and wine from their tiny kiosk and enjoy a film in one of the auditoriums.

Widcombe – Great for Escaping the Busy City

Widcombe is a great base for a weekend trip to Bath, it even has its own high street lined with shops, cafes, and pubs. Many tourists don’t find this little suburb of Bath as it’s behind the station and away from all the main attractions.

If you’re on a budget or hoping to avoid paying the often higher prices that come with staying in the heart of the city, staying further afield is a really viable option in Bath. The cute village of Combe Down is only 3 miles away and has regular bus links to and from the city.

Getting to Bath

Bath is located on the southwestern side of England and is serviced by a good-sized train station. There are usually two direct trains an hour from London Paddington that take around 80 minutes and cost around $30 – $45. Trains from most UK locations are easy and convenient, though can be expensive (especially if you plan to travel at peak times).

If trains aren’t your thing, or you want more freedom to explore, you can rent a car at the airport in Bristol, or London.

Bath bus station is located about a minute’s walk from the train station, and has regular National Express coaches to and from London, usually once an hour during the day. With a connection or two, you’ll be able to access Bath from most major UK cities via National Express coaches. The closest international airport is in Bristol, about 20 miles away.

Getting around in Bath is very easy. It’s straightforward and enjoyable to walk everywhere as the main hub of the center is set up primarily for pedestrians to safely explore. The local bus service is swift and efficient, connecting all parts of Bath and beyond, it’s super economical too at just $2.50 per trip. Taxis and ride-sharing apps operate in the city too.
