A 4.1 magnitude earthquake rattled Southern California just hours after it rang in the new year, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The USGS reported Monday that the 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck about 12 miles south of Ranchos Palos Verdes just before 8:30 a.m. local time. The USGS also noted that the earthquake had a depth of about 7 miles.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that there was no threat of a tsunami yet from the quake. She also said that there were no reports of any damage yet. The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also does not have any advisories issued due to the earthquake.
According to the USGS, there is a “low likelihood of casualties and damage” as a result of the earthquake. It estimated that about 17,621 people felt a “weak” shaking at the time.
The city of Ranchos Palos Verdes also posted additional safety tips after the earthquake, urging residents “to always be prepared” with survival supplies such as water, food, extra clothing, flashlights and a radio.
The California earthquake came just hours after a series of earthquakes, including a 7.6 magnitude one, shook western Japan on Monday and prompted officials to issue evacuation orders and tsunami warnings.
