The Best Red Carpet Looks From the 2024 Governors Awards

Last night, Florence Pugh did something that sent turned heads: She wore a dress that could not be described as “sheer,” “risqué,” “nude-illusion,” or “naked.” One of the many top-tier talents in attendance at the 14th Governors Awards in Los Angeles—a sort of pre-Oscars warm up, where the Academy honored Angela Bassett and Mel Brooks alongside film executives Carol Littleton and Michelle Satter—Pugh wore a custom, crystal-encrusted peplum gown designed by Rodarte. Her hair teased into Old Hollywood waves, this might signal an evolution in Pugh’s relationship with fashion: no longer rebelling against, but soaking in, the red carpet glamour.

Other notable fashion moments included Julianne Moore in a caped robe from Valentino’s spring 2024 collection, festooned in cascading teardrop paillettes. And then there was Olivia Rodrigo in a vintage Saint Laurent, Penelope Cruz in a tiered Chanel gown and Emma Stone in a Fendi couture skirt-suit. At this point, it should come as little surprise that the best-dressed attendees were Greta Lee—in a red Bottega Veneta dress with padded pannier-style hips and metallic mules—and Ayo Edebiri in a butter yellow dress from Proenza Schouler’s spring 2024 collection. It’s these ascendant tastemakers who make awards season that bit more interesting.
