I’ve always had a complex relationship with New Year’s Eve. On one hand, I love any excuse for a party, especially if attendees are encouraged to dress in theme with lots of sparkles. On the other, NYE in New York City is essentially one crowded, champagne-fueled rampage through the freezing streets. Plus there’s always pressure to have the best night ever when in reality, most of us would like to be home and in bed by 12:01 (fellow millennials, you know it’s true). Regardless of where the evening takes you, your lipstick had better be up to the task. That means there’s little need to reapply, especially if you’re out somewhere dark and with limited access to mirrors for a touch-up. My recommendation? A matte long-wear liquid lipstick.

While I typically turn to a tinted balm for daytime, a night out — no matter how riotous — calls for something a little more dramatic. A matte liquid lip formula is typically highly pigmented, which is the perfect vehicle for your favorite power red shade, and it has the staying power to last through multiple cocktails, a multi-course dinner, and (hopefully) a smooch or two.

With just a few days to go before ringing in the New Year, I’m sharing three of my most tried-and-true liquid lipsticks to add to your beauty lineup. Just make sure to exfoliate your lips before applying them (I like using a homemade scrub of honey and sugar), then sit with a nourishing lip balm, like Rhode Peptide Lip Treatment ($16), for 10 to 15 minutes. Then carefully apply your color, using a cotton bud and micellar water to clean up the edges before it completely dries. And voila — your lips are set for at least eight hours of frivolity, however that looks to you.
