Rep. Jordan says Mayorkas impeachment inquiry ‘all part of the Biden administration’

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) on Wednesday noted the House’s expected impeachment inquiry into Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is an extension of its examination into the Biden administration’s handling of the border.

Asked on NewsNation’s “On Balance with Leland Vittert” if Mayorkas’s impeachment would make a difference for the border situation if the problem relates to the Biden administration’s policy, Jordan said, “Well, I think it’s all part of the Biden administration, I think you’re right with that.”

Vittert interjected and asked the Ohio Republican if impeaching Mayorkas is a “sort of a political show” that wouldn’t “make a difference at the border.”

“Well, look…any decision on impeachment should be based on the facts,” Jordan responded. “And we’re in an impeachment inquiry phase about the president, we’ve been in an impeachment sort of inquiry phase about Mayorkas as well.”

“I would say based on the work that Chairman [Rep. Mark] Green [R-Tenn.] has done in the Homeland Security Committee and some of the frankly, the hearings, we’ve had in our committee, we’re going to be driven by the facts, we’re going to be driven by the evidence and then we’ll make a decision.”

Jordan’s comments came just hours after the House Homeland Security Committee announced it will launch a series of impeachment hearings against Mayorkas, with the first of four hearings slated for Jan. 10. Green alleges Mayorkas, in his role as Homeland Security secretary, displayed “dereliction of duty” in his handling of the border.

The pushback against Mayorkas has built over the past year among House GOP members amid an influx of migrants at the U.S. southern border.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) last November introduced a resolution to boot Mayorkas from the job, which she later withdrew a vote for, after Green assured her that the House would move forward with impeachment proceedings.

Green said in an interview on Fox News last month that articles of impeachment for Mayorkas have been drafted and would be marked up at the end of the process.

Jordan was among a group of about 60 Republicans, led by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), to travel to the border near Eagle Pass, Texas, on Wednesday.
