Jean Paul Gaultier’s first designs were made on an inanimate teddy bear. Not long after taking his work to the runway in the late 1980s, his influence went global. Now, by inviting a different designer to create a couture collection for his maison each season, the Frenchman has brought his archive to life. Tapped to waken “Sleeping Beauty” for spring 2024 was Simone Rocha, who created ethereal creations based on pieces not only from Gaultier’s couture but his ready-to-wear and costume designs. Rocha’s opening look, for example, references the Tatouages show of spring 1994. Thirty years on, it still hits the mark.
