More Than 143,000 Pounds of Deli Meat Are Being Recalled Nationwide

  • The USDA has recalled 143,416 pounds of ready-to-eat bologna made by Gaiser’s European Style Provisions in New Jersey due to misbranding and undeclared meat ingredients, including pork, beef, and chicken.
  • The recall involves seven types of bologna sold nationwide from March 20 to June 20, all marked with the establishment number “EST. 5385” inside the USDA inspection label.
  • No illnesses have been reported, and the recall is classified as Class III, meaning it’s not expected to cause adverse health effects, but consumers are advised to discard or return the products.

If you recently purchased any ready-to-eat bologna, then it's time to check your fridge.

On Friday, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a recall for 143,416 pounds of ready-to-eat bologna made by Gaiser's European Style Provisions in Union, New Jersey. According to the notice, the recall is due to “misbranding.” The recall was prompted after the Office of the Inspector General notified the FSIS following a tip received through its hotline.

“The various bologna products subject to recall contain meat or poultry source materials that are not declared on the product labels,” the FSIS stated.

The ready-to-eat bologna that is a part of this recall was produced between March 20 and June 20. It includes the following products:

  • Vacuum-packed packages of “family tree bologna veal” containing undeclared pork.
  • Plastic-wrapped packages of “babushka's recipe chicken bologna” contained undeclared pork.
  • Plastic-wrapped packages of “fancy bologna” labeled with pork as an ingredient but containing undeclared beef and chicken.
  • Vacuum-packed packages of “Gaisers Russian brand doktorskaya bologna” containing undeclared beef.
  • Plastic-wrapped packages of “Gaisers bologna veal” containing undeclared chicken and pork.
  • Plastic-wrapped packages of “Gaisers turkey bologna” containing undeclared chicken and pork.
  • Plastic-wrapped packages of “chicken bologna kypoyka paba” containing undeclared pork.

The products were distributed to wholesale and retail locations nationwide. All of them feature the establishment number “EST. 5385,” which consumers can find inside the USDA mark of inspection on the labels.

The FSIS noted that it does not expect consumers who accidentally consume the recalled products to become ill. It also classified the recall as a Class III, which it defines as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.” There have also been no confirmed reports of illness related to the recall.

However, the FSIS expressed concern that the recalled product might still be in people's refrigerators and freezers. It advises consumers who have bought these products to either discard them or return them to the place of purchase. Anyone with questions about the recall can contact Steven Shuchinski, Manager of Gaiser’s European Style Provisions, at 908-686-3421 or gaisers@verizon.net.
