Democratic lawmaker Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) said that former President Trump is the “only reason” the U.S.-Mexico bipartisan deal has derailed.
During his CNN appearance on “Anderson Cooper 360°” Tuesday, Goldman said that the only reason GOP senators would abandon the bipartisan border deal is due to Trump’s pressure hovering over the upper chamber, which he would then utilize to further benefit his 2024 campaign.
“The Senate Republicans now ditch this bipartisan deal that they have reached with the President and with Senate Democrats, it is solely because Donald Trump has directed Republicans not to give Joe Biden a policy win in an election year because he wants to run on the chaos at the border,” Goldman said on Tuesday night. “That is the only reason this has been derailed, is because Donald Trump does not want Republicans to solve our problems. He wants the problems to persist so that he can use it for his election campaign.”
The former president has been railing against the border deal, asserting that it would weaken the border and deeming it unnecessary. He did receive some pushback from a few GOP senators.
“A Border Bill is not necessary to stop the millions of people, many from jails and mental institutions located all over the World, that are POURING INTO OUR COUNTRY. It is an INVASION the likes of which no Country has ever had to endure. It is not sustainable or affordable, and will, under Crooked Joe Biden, ONLY GET WORSE,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Negotiations on both sides of the aisle have been working on crystallizing the final details of the bill.
Goldman blasted the GOP for “politicizing” the issue, characterizing the rhetoric as a new phase for Republicans where they deem the bipartisan legislation unnecessary.
“Now that Republicans realize that they look bad trying to politicize this issue and undermine a comprehensive bipartisan solution,” Goldman said. “They’re moving to their next talking point, which is, oh, we don’t need legislation to do this. Well, that is certainly very different than everything that they have been saying for this entire Congress. And that’s different than the reality on the ground.”
Over the weekend, Trump suggested that he is fine with being blamed if the southern border deal faults and that the legislation would be a “catastrophe waiting to happen.”
“As the leader of our party, there is zero chance I will support this horrible open borders betrayal of America,” Trump told his supporters on Saturday. “I’ll fight it all the way. A lot of the senators are trying to say, respectfully, they’re blaming it on me. I say, that’s okay. Please blame it on me. Please.”
