Draped-Layers Haircut Trend Inspiration | POPSUGAR Beauty

Remember when the “Rachel” haircut was everywhere in the ’90s? People couldn’t get enough of the “Friends”-inspired hairstyle. Well, get ready for this year’s version of the look to take over: “draped layers.” This haircut trend features everything we loved about that ’90s hairstyle — lots of movement, choppy texture, and face-framing layers — but now with a modern twist.

“The layers are cut around your face at different levels of lengths that accentuate your features to give a pop,” Raven Hurtado, hairstylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, tells POPSUGAR.

What Is a Draped-Layers Haircut?

What sets this haircut apart from other face-framing layered styles is the way it’s cut, which, at varying levels and lengths, allows them to sit in a cascading pattern around the face. “Think of it as when you layer curtains and how it has layers that drape over each other,” Hurtado says. Traditional face-framing layers are often much more subtle and blended — this style provides the opposite look. It’s heavier and chunkier, and it gives lots of contrast.

How to Style a Draped-Layers Haircut

Once you have the haircut, styling it is pretty straightforward. “Draped layers look best when blown out with a round brush going inward toward your face, so you see how the layers drape over each other,” Hurtado says. Though the style is easier to spot on straight and wavy hair, it works on all hair types. Those with curly hair should diffuse their ends with a blow dryer to encourage volume and bounce so that “you’ll be able to see the lengths of the layers.”
