Tavi Gevinson joined the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Elle Fanning, and Sarah Paulson at last night’s premiere of the Broadway play Appropriate, and she wore her favorite coat to mark the occasion.
Gevinson, who cut her teeth on Broadway starring in This Is Our Youth alongside Kieran Culkin and Michael Cera in 2014, dressed for the event in a brown faux-fur coat from Carven with rhinestone arrow embellishments. Underneath her fuzzy jacket she wore an off-white button-up with plaid houndstooth pants. But Gevinson dressed up her quotidian base with lively accessories, wearing bubblegum-pink lug-sole shoes and a thematically appropriate beaded playbill purse from Susan Alexandra. Finished off with a bold red lip, the Gossip Girl actor’s look was reminiscent of her Rookie Mag heyday, leaning into the maximalism that earned her front row seats to fashion week as an 11-year-old.Â
The eye-catching coat, from Carven’s fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection, has been a mainstay in Gevinson’s wardrobe, making an appearance on at least six other occasions. She first wore it to the Girls season four premiere in 2015, dressing it down with blue jeans and a white button-up, and most recently wore it to the Phantom Thread in 2017 with a star-patterned set, glittery black ballet flats, and powder-blue socks that matched her fuzzy purse. Perhaps the most hallmark Rookie-era moment was her 2016 Knight Of Cups premiere look, in which she paired a sheer lace blouse with snakeskin heels, Twiggy-inspired makeup, and a hair scarf.
What a pleasure it is to watch a young artist—especially someone with as much natural style as Gevinson—evolve sartorially while still cherishing pieces in their wardrobe over time. This former Rookie reader looks forward to seeing how Tavi Gevinson wears her Carven coat over the next 10 years.
