Dakota Johnson Is On Board With Method Dressing

Dakota Johnson’s latest role in Hollywood? Playing a superhero. The actor is set to star in Marvel’s Madame Web this month, in which Johnson plays Cassandra Webb—a New York City paramedic who begins to show signs of clairvoyance. Earlier this week Johnson began her press tour for the film, delivering a modern take on the tuxedo for the movie’s first red carpet. Last night, she upped the fashion ante with a method look: While attending the Vogue Carnival Ball in Rio de Janeiro, Johnson wore a sheer black dress, intricately beaded with crystals in the formation of a web.

Styled by Kate Young, the glitzy look included a gown-length version of the cobweb mini dress ($2,126) by Annie’s Ibiza. To make the ensemble even more theatrical, Johnson paired the dress with a webbed cape-hood.

The look is one of several method dressing efforts we’ve seen in recent years. In 2019, Zendaya attended the world premier of Spider-Man: No Way Home in a web-embellished gown, too—her’s by Valentino. While promoting the latest adaptation of The Color Purple, Oprah dressed exclusively in the hue, and Margot Robbie’s Barbie looks were a master class in the approach.

For her part, Johnson nailed the concept; the look is literal, but executed with a level of craftsmanship and styling that reads elevated, not cheesy. Perhaps she’ll nod to the iconic spider catsuit next—because she sure knows how to pull one off.
