What to Pack For a Winter Vacation in Berlin
My friends and I have gone on an annual winter trip for the last four years, and because we live in New York City, that usually means enjoying a swim-up bar in Cancun, an evening luau on Waikiki, or boat rides in Cartagena. These sun-kissed holidays help us escape the chilling NYC temperatures, but this year, we decided to double down on the cozy vibes and go to Berlin. Known for historic sites like the Berlin Wall, party-all-night clubs, and incredible bread and sausages, we spent a week getting to know the city and exploring its local charms.
For those looking to venture outside of Airbnb for lodging, Berlin has a great boutique hotel scene. We stayed at the charming Hotel Luc, and there are tons of other affordable options in the area as well. Ahead, read all about my experience, including packing tips and where to find the best sausages.
Best Packing Tips For Berlin
With winter temperatures averaging around 29 to 38 degrees Fahrenheit, be sure to pack warm layers. I found it helpful to wear earmuffs and keep a light jacket on underneath my coat. The weather is unpredictable in terms of rain or snow, so be sure to have a coat with a hood in case you need to take cover.
Your days will be spent exploring the East Side Gallery and other landmarks, enjoying a pint at a vibrant biergarten, and shopping at the local stores. For this, you'll want to pack durable walking shoes, a fanny pack or other hands-free bag option, and a camera to capture all your memories. If there's one thing you must eat while in Berlin, it's a delicious currywurst or bratwurst sausage — my favorite one was from Gaffel Haus.
If you're in the mood for nightlife, Berlin has a great dining scene with innovative cocktails and deeply filling meals (be sure to have all the pasta at Sagrantino Wine Bar). Depending on where you go, you'll want to have outfits that you can dress up or down. Lastly, if you're interested in dancing, I'd recommend Berghain, Sisyphos, and YAAM. Berlin is home to some of the best techno, EDM, and dubstep music in the world, so you're bound to have a great time.
