What Is Ariana Grande’s Sweatshirt Trying to Tell Us?

What are you trying to tell us, Ariana Grande?

The singer was spotted today in New York City wearing a black crewneck sweatshirt with white text that read: “yes, and?” Grande paired the top with similarly laidback pieces: a pair of loose blue jeans and black fur-lined, lug-sole booties. She toted a cognac-colored Devon bag from The Row in the crook of her arm, which she matched with her dramatic winged eyeliner.

With Grande in the recording studio lately, it’s reasonable to conclude that the sweatshirt is related to her as-yet-untitled forthcoming album. This isn’t the first time that Grande has used clothing to promote a song, either. She’s previously worn sweatshirts that bore the name of other singles, “positions” “No Tears Left to Cry,” and “Dangerous Woman.”

While some fans are speculating that this is the title of the lead single from her next album (seemingly confirmed by Grande’s mother on X), reformed theater kids—like child Broadway star Grande—will surely recognize the phrase as the holy grail of improv rules. (For those who are blissfully unaware, “yes, and” is the cardinal rule of improvisation, meant to encourage open-mindedness in a scene.)

So while we aren’t sure what’s to come from Ariana Grande’s next album, all we can say is a very enthusiastic “yes, and!”
