US and South Korea postpone defence talks and joint exercises

Japan’s Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba said on Wednesday that, while he was not in a position to comment on the internal affairs of other countries, he was watching the situation in Korea with “particular and grave” concerns.

Ishiba, who became prime minister in September, has previously signalled that he planned to press ahead with Japanese efforts to improve bilateral ties with South Korea, which have thawed significantly over the past year.

As part of that, Ishiba had reportedly begun planning a meeting with President Yoon Suk Yeol in Seoul as soon as January. Ishiba said that there were not any “concrete plans” regarding such a visit.

Ishiba said that Japan was taking all possible measures to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals in South Korea.
