President Trump on Thursday said that Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) should be forced to take an IQ test after the congressman was removed from his joint address and later censured by the House.
“[He] should be forced to pass an IQ test because he is a low IQ individual, and we don’t need low IQ individuals in Congress,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News Digital.
“He should be censured,” Trump added, calling the congressman “a fool and a clown.”
The House voted to censure Green in a largely party-line 224-198-2 vote on Thursday for his protest during Trump’s address, which the censure resolution dubbed “a breach of proper conduct.”
Green, in a disruptive display, stood up and waved his cane in the air and yelled back at the president after he claimed he had a “mandate,” interrupting his speech on Tuesday night within the first few minutes. He also said Trump did not have such authority to cut Medicaid, as some Republicans eye slashes to the social safety net program.
The president bashed Green as an embarrassment.
“Nobody takes him seriously,” Trump said Thursday. “He is an embarrassment to Congress but a much bigger embarrassment to the Democrats.”
Before Green was removed from the chamber on Tuesday night, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) warned him to take his seat.
Ten Democrats voted with Republicans in favor of the censure. Green, who became the 28th member of the House to receive the congressional rebuke, voted “present.”
The White House has hit Democrats for their response to Trump during the speech, calling it “disgraceful” and focusing criticism on Democrats not standing up to cheer for certain moments that she argued were positive wins for Americans.
Trump on Wednesday night said that “Democrats should lose the Midterms based on their behavior” and said Republicans should use the response from the left during the speech on the campaign trail.
