Trentino, Italy, Will Pay You Up to 100,000 Euros to Move There
A few years ago, Italian houses selling for just one euro were all the rage. And they were snapped up like hotcakes, with locals and expats moving in to revitalize entire communities. And now, the northern Italian region of Trentino is getting in on the action, offering to pay people about 100,000 euros to relocate there. But, naturally, there are some major caveats.
As CNN reported, the region is open to paying both residents of Italy and Italians living abroad to move to the area and renovate an abandoned home, providing grants of up to 80,000 euros for the renovation and up to 20,000 euros for purchasing the property. The specific amount would equal up to 40 percent of the expenses incurred for the purchase and renovation of properties, Immobiliare News explained.
To get this sweet deal, you must promise to either live in the home for a decade or rent it out to a local for the same length of time (a.k.a. no flippers or short-term rentals allowed). If you don't, you may be forced to pay all that grant money back.
The final list of eligible communities taking part has not yet been announced, but will likely be unveiled in the coming weeks. It will probably have communities that are on the edge of disappearing forever, including towns and villages in Val di Non, Val di Sole, Vallagarina, Castello Tesino, Val di Cembra, Val di Fiemme, Valfloriana, and Val di Fassa.
“These are territories that, while maintaining a strong cultural and landscape identity, have seen a progressive decrease in residents,” Nicola Teofilo, a real estate writer with Immobiliare News, reported. “Many of these villages are located in mountain or valley contexts, where daily life can be more complex due to the distance from the main services.”
According to Teofilo's reporting, Trentino has allocated 10 million euros to the project for the next two years, which would provide at least 100 people with the funds they need to move in and renovate, fighting depopulation along the way. Those interested can also invest in up to three units or homes, allowing for family and friends to get involved, too.
CNN noted, the budget is a smaller piece of a larger federal fund created in 2024 to be used by communities with fewer than 5,000 residents, which have also been identified as those suffering economic loss due to depopulation. So, odds are, this isn't the last place that will come up with grants and homes to sell, just in case this deal wasn't enticing enough to get you there.
