This Winter, Let’s Embrace the Formal Scarf

Dressing for cold days can be an unsavory task. Perhaps you, like me, have spent multiple winter days sitting in bed for ages because the thought of pulling on new (cold) clothes is just unbearable. While work clothes can at least follow a formula, more formal occasions demand extra attention. Enter: the formal scarf.

Okay, fine, formal scarves aren’t really doing a whole lot in terms of warmth, but there’s nothing wrong with a vestigial accessory. The Golden Globes provided ample opportunity for celebrities to add a wintery touch to their looks. Anya Taylor-Joy, dressed in a pale pink archival Dior dress, draped a thin silk shawl around her elbows, which added some contrast to her open back. Dakota Fanning also tried out the look at the Globes, although her diaphanous red scarf was built into her red Dolce & Gabbana dress.

While a few famous women have shown off their best formal scarves, this seems to be a male-dominated trend—particularly beloved by Timothée Chalamet. The A Complete Unknown star also used the January awards show to rock a scarf in the first instance of Haider Ackermann’s Tom Ford, a blue scarf thrown haphazardly over his shoulder. But Chalamet didn’t stop there. For the Paris premiere of the Bob Dylan biopic, he slung a Pepto Bismol-pink scarf from Afghan brand Bibi Star over his Chanel, interwoven with gold thread and beaded fringe around his neck.

Colman Domingo also proved himself a fan of the neckpiece. Dressed in a dapper Valentino suit at the Globes, the Sing Sing star eschewed a bowtie in favor of a black-and-white fringed scarf, tied in a bow at his neck. If all of these stylish people are on board, perhaps we’ll consider adding a frivolous scarf to our next formal look—no matter how useless.
