This European City Was Just Named the World’s ‘Smartest’

The International Institute for Management Development (IMD) recently released its Smart Cities Index, examining 142 global cities based on economic and technological advancements and factors such as sustainability, inclusiveness, and livability. For the fifth straight year, Zurich tops the list as the world’s smartest city, with Oslo and Canberra, Australia, following closely behind.

From groundbreaking smart grids and futuristic 3D city mapping to sustainable energy solutions and a seamless public transportation network, Zurich remains at the forefront of the digital transformation of cities, setting a new standard for urban living. But the Swiss city is not just a global center of innovation. It also ranks highly as one of the world’s most beautiful cities.

Surrounded by a stunning panorama of mountains, magnificent lakes, and tranquil rivers, Zurich has abundant natural, historical, and cultural attractions for residents and visitors to enjoy. In the heart of Zurich lies the old town, Altstadt, with its cobblestone alleys, cozy bars, high-end boutiques, and medieval cathedrals. The city also has more than 70 parks and gardens and an impressive 150 galleries and museums, including the renowned Kunsthaus Zurich and the Swiss National Museum. To truly appreciate Zurich’s splendor, stroll along the Limmat River, embark on a scenic boat journey across Lake Zurich, or hike up Uetliberg Mountain for sweeping views of the city.

Food enthusiasts can relish Zurich’s vibrant gastronomic scene, which includes traditional cafes and more than a dozen Michelin-starred restaurants. Indulge in decadent Swiss chocolate at Lindt Home of Chocolate or a mouthwatering fondue at the Swiss Chuchi restaurant at Hotel Adler.

An impeccable array of luxury hotels grace the city, from the recently opened Mandarin Oriental Savoy, housed in a historic property on the famous Paradeplatz, to The Dolder Grand, a majestic castle hotel perched atop Adlisberg Hill, adorned with more than 100 works of art.

Not surprisingly, three of the top 10 cities on the list are in Switzerland, with Geneva ranking fourth and Lausanne ranking seventh. The remaining top cities are Singapore, listed fifth, Copenhagen; London; Helsinki, Finland; and Abu Dhabi.
