Stay off roads in Elmore and Montgomery counties, authorities warn

Road conditions were hazardous in Montgomery and Elmore counties Wednesday morning and travel is not advised, authorities said.

Officials are asking people to stay off the roads until conditions improve.

All streets and overpasses and bridges in the city of Montgomery are impassable as are roads in the county, said Wade Lyles, director of the Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency.

“We are asking that if you don't need to be on the roads, stay off the roads,” he said. “We have city and county crews out sanding icy areas, but there are icy conditions everywhere. It will get above freezing for a short period today, and hopefully there will be a thaw.

“But we are looking at lows in the mid to upper teens for Thursday morning, so we could see a refreeze in some areas. We could see icy conditions again Thursday morning, especially on bridges and overpasses.”

All county roads were deemed impassable in Elmore County on Wednesday morning. The hardest hit areas are the streets in and around Tallassee and an area south and east of Highway 14, said Keith Barnett, the county's EMA director.

Autauga County and Prattville reported no travel problems. Prattville, in the extreme southeast corner of the county, got a dusting of snow Tuesday. Light accumulations were reported in the county.

The National Weather Service forecast for the tri-county area calls for lows in the mid to upper teens through Friday morning. Highs will creep up to the low to mid-40s by Friday.
