South Memphis climbing gym Memphis Rox to close after shooting kills employee
Memphis Rox, a climbing gym and community center in South Memphis, will be temporarily closed after one of their employees was killed in a shooting on June 29.
“Tonight, we lost one of our most beloved Memphis Rox team members to gun violence,” the gym wrote in a social media post. “We will close our doors this week, beginning Monday, June 30, as we process our grief.”
Officers responded to a shooting inside the gym, located at 879 E. McLemore, at 4:13 p.m. June 29, a spokesperson for the Memphis Police Department said. One man was pronounced dead on the scene and another person was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. A third individual was detained, MPD said.
MPD said it’s likely the people involved in the shooting knew each other.
MPD encourages anyone with information on the crime to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
