San Diego asks that you not put these items in your garbage bins

(FOX 5/KUSI) — Two days in a row this week, waste collection trucks almost caught on fire in San Diego due to people throwing items into their bins that they were not supposed to.

According to the city, fire crews were called to extinguish a fire on Wednesday and another on Thursday after the trucks emptied their contents onto the road, a standard practice to avoid further damage to the vehicles and to prevent a larger fire.

Wednesday’s fire happened on near Comstock and Jewett Streets in Linda Vista and was caused by a lithium battery.

Thursday’s fire happened near Park Blvd. and Myrtle Ave. in North Park and was caused by a patio heater.

The city shared pictures on Facebook that show both items that reportedly caused the fire, as well as the entire contents of one truck in the middle of a roadway.

According to the city, no trucks were damaged and no people were injured in either fire, but officials emphasize that situations like this can be “extremely dangerous.”

The city reminds residents that household hazardous waste, including paint, batteries, motor oil and filters, propane cylinders, medications, needles, light bulbs, electronics and other items should not be thrown into the regular waste bins for weekly pickup.

Many of these items can be turned in for free at certain facilities, or other options for disposal can be arranged with the city so that they are properly disposed of.
