Republican rep accuses FBI of focusing on ‘identity politics’ over its LGBTQIA+ acronym adoption policy

Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.) accused the FBI of focusing on “identity politics” after the office announced it would be adopting the acronym LGBTQIA+ in place of LGBT+.

“The FBI is focused on leftwing identity politics while we face the greatest threat of domestic terrorism since 9/11 because Biden opened our southern border,” Miller posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

According to an internal email sent to all FBI employees, the change came from Bureau Equality, one of the nine Diversity Advisory Committees, and was approved by executive management “to help promote a more welcoming workplace for members of our LGBTQIA+ community.”

The acronym stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual/aromantic. The plus represents other gender, sexual and romantic identities not covered in the acronym, the FBI said.

The bureau will use the acronym for all external communication and internal events, observances, products and communication.

More than 30 federal agencies, including the Department of Justice, use a form of expanded acronym or use LGBTQIA+ acronym, the email said
