On the Podcast: Edward Enninful on the ’90s and Olympian Gabby Thomas on NYFW

The 1990s never go out of style—a fact Edward Enninful would know better than anyone. Between modeling, developing a friendship with Naomi Campbell, and his role as fashion director at i-D, Enninful was enmeshed in all things fashion during that era. He joins The Run-Through to revisit some of his favorite moments of the decade ahead of the release of the docuseries In Vogue: The ’90s, which premieres on Hulu on September 13.

“We were coming out of the ’80s, where everything was so excessive and glamorous, and we were all trying to find our way in this new decade,” Enninful shared with hosts Chloe Malle and Chioma Nnadi.

Enninful was first spotted on a train by a modeling scout when he was 16, and by 18 he’d become the youngest fashion director in i-D’s history. While there, he worked with the figures and the fashion that would help shape the way we dress today, including grunge and hip hop-inspired styles. He became a contributing editor at Vogue Italia and went on to create its iconic Black Issue, featuring only Black models and cultural figures. (It sold out immediately in the US and the UK.) As he tells Malle and Nnadi, the issue “was needed at the time. It was necessary.”

But before all that, we kick the episode off with New York Fashion Week! Chloe joins Olympic gold medalist Gabby Thomas for a ride to the Tommy Hilfiger show and walks Chioma through the most memorable shows of the week, so if you want to hear about the best moments from Off-White, Alaïa, and Willy Chavarria, this episode is for you!
