Ohio teen ordered to write book report on WWII after planning a mass shooting at a synagogue

A 13-year-old in Ohio who was accused of planning a mass shooting at a synagogue in September has been ordered to undergo counseling and write a book report about a World War II rescue mission, CNN reported.

The teenager, who has not been publicly named because he is a minor, reached a plea agreement with a juvenile court on Friday. He faced juvenile misdemeanor charges of inducing panic and disorderly conduct. Law enforcement claimed the boy created a “detailed plan” on the Discord platform to complete the mass shooting at the Temple Israel in Canton, Ohio, The Hill previously reported.

He was sentenced to 180 days in a juvenile detention center but the judge credited him 10 days for time served and then suspended the rest of his sentence.

The judge ordered him to 12 months of probation where he will receive counseling service and be unable to use the internet unsupervised, CNN noted.

He will be required to write a book report about Carl Lutz, a Swiss diplomat who is credited for saving over 60,000 Jews during World War II.

The teenager was set to go to trial on Dec. 20 in Stark County Family Court, south of Akron, prior to the agreed upon plea agreement. Law enforcement was required to notify the school system and local agencies which “caused significant public alarm.”

Although the teenager’s arrest happened before the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war in early October, his charges and sentencing come during a time of increased antisemitic attacks in the U.S.
