Murray’s Cheese Cave Aged Limited Triple Crème de Cocoa

My husband and I aren’t big Valentine’s Day people. We dated for about nine years before finally tying the knot and the most we’ve ever done to celebrate is eat at a good restaurant. For us, it’s less about laziness and more about a general lack of sentimentality. That said, if a tasty holiday treat presents itself to us, we’re not going to say no, and this year we were inspired to pay proper homage to our relationship by Murray’s Cheese and its unexpectedly delicious Cave Aged Limited Triple Crème de Cocoa. Or, in layman's terms, chocolate cheese.

The combination isn’t anything new. Hot cocoa made with cheese is a staple in Colombia, the two ingredients are often used as toppings for sweet pancakes and griddled bananas in Southeast Asia, Vosges Haut-Chocolat out of Chicago combines Vermont cheddar and apples in chocolate bars, and we can’t forget about chocolate cheesecake. Still, it’s not often that we stumble upon an 8-ounce wheel of St. Stephen triple crème from Four Fat Fowl in the Hudson Valley that’s been stuffed with melted milk chocolate, aged for two weeks in a cave, and finished with chocolate shavings. It makes for a striking image — and a delicious bite.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from Murray’s limited-edition Triple Crème de Cocoa, but I was anticipating something mild and cloying. To my surprise, my first bite revealed a tangy and more flavorful cheese than, say, a wheel of brie, and a chocolate center that leaned closer to bitter than sweet. I tried the unexpectedly delicious cheese plain with crackers, topped with raspberries, and slathered with jam, but I can also see it meshing beautifully with salty pork on a charcuterie board.

Food & Wine

While I doubt that my relationship will suddenly take on the trappings of a much more romantic couple, I will say that it was nice to honor our decade together in some small way. Yes, we celebrated early, and sure, the celebration was technically eating food over a sink to minimize crumb cleanup, but it was cheesy, chocolaty, and undeniably delicious. What more could we ask for on Valentine’s Day?
