Most GOP primary voters in NH say Trump would be fit for White House if convicted: Exit polling

Most Republican voters in the Granite State said former President Trump would still be fit for office, even if convicted in one of his four criminal indictments, according to exit polling from The Washington Post.

The New Hampshire preliminary polls found that 87 percent of Trump voters would still support his presidential bid, even if he were to be convicted of a crime.

Republicans who voted for his GOP rival, Nikki Haley, were more likely to be opposed to the idea of Trump holding office if convicted of a crime. Roughly 84 percent said Trump would not be fit for the White House if convicted, while 12 percent Haley’s supporters said the opposite, per The Post.

Just 13 percent of Trump supporters said he should not hold office if convicted, the polling found.

The former president is currently facing 91 charges across four cases, two of which are focused on his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election that he lost to President Biden.

Legal efforts have ramped up, including attempts by the prosecutors to expedite trials in an effort for a conviction ahead of the election. Trump’s team, however, has sought to delay the process until after voters cast their general election ballots in November.

An overwhelming majority of voters who cast their ballot in the New Hampshire primary for Trump do not believe Biden legitimately won the 2020 presidential election, the exit polls show. Among Trump supporters, 86 percent do not think the last election’s results were legitimate, while 21 percent said Biden did win, The Post reported.

The Hill/Decision Desk HQ called the race in Trump’s favor just after polls closed Tuesday around 8 p.m. With over 170,000 votes, the former president earned 54.6 percent, while Haley, the only remaining GOP challenger, trailed behind with 43.4 percent.

The exit polls largely mimicked results from entrance polling conducted last week ahead of the Iowa caucuses, which Trump won easily. Most Iowans who support the former president also said they believe Biden’s 2020 win was illegitimate and two-thirds believe the former president would be fit for the White House even if he is convicted, according to The Post.

The New Hampshire survey results are based on 2,129 voters as they exited randomly selected polling locations across the state.
