Matthew McConaughey’s Favorite Fast Food for the Super Bowl
You’d be hard pressed to find a brand more committed to football season than Uber Eats. If you’ve tuned into an NFL game during the past few months, it’s likely that you’ve seen the delivery platform’s now-iconic ad featuring Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey, which depicts the native Texan explaining his own conspiracy theory to San Francisco 49er running back Christian McCaffrey: that football was invented to sell food.
To cap off the conspiracy that Uber Eats and McConaughey have been developing together all season, the pair filmed the ultimate Super Bowl commercial, which breaks down the history of how football was created as a ploy to peddle food.
It’s not surprising that McConaughey was the celebrity of choice for a partnership with Uber Eats. He’s a major football fan who's regularly on the sidelines at the University of Texas games in Austin, and he’s shared his opinion on everything from how to build a burger to a now-famous formula for the best tuna salad. It’s clear that football and food are regularly on his mind, and in an interview with Food & Wine, McConaughey spilled the beans on what he considers to be the best fast food for ordering on a game day.
When we asked McConaughey what he always orders via Uber Eats to enjoy during a football game, the Austin-based actor immediately said “I mean, you can’t go wrong with some Raising Cane’s.” As someone who is also from Texas — which is home to a whopping 199 locations of this fast food chain — I couldn’t agree more.
For anyone who hasn’t had a chance to try food from Cane's yet (as it's often colloquially called), the menu is incredibly simple, but also very well done. The restaurant focuses on just a few items: chicken tenders, Texas toast, coleslaw, and french fries, but it nails the recipe and execution for each one. The toast is ultra buttery and rich, and the chicken tenders are battered, not breaded, which ensures that their coating is light and crisp. And above all else, the food you get from this chain will always be piping hot.
You can order different numbers and combinations of the menu items, but the core offerings always remain the same. Perhaps most importantly: every order of chicken fingers from Cane’s comes with the restaurant’s famous dipping sauce. The Cane’s sauce is creamy, tangy, and subtly spiced, which makes it perfect for pairing with richer fried foods.
For McConaughey, a finger food like chicken tenders or fries is the epitome of what football food is all about. He says that his ideal game day bite is “anything that doesn’t need a fork… It’s nice to [watch] the game and eat with your hands,” and he emphasizes that “It’s the Super Bowl. You want it to go straight from hand to mouth. There it is. It's hot. It's good. It's as it is. It doesn't need anything else, you know. Put a bib on and get after it.”
While watching football, the actor also loves anything dunkable, telling Food & Wine, “Everyone loves to dip whatever they have…We love sauces, I think everyone loves sauces to dip whatever they're eating in.” If you’re looking for something finger food friendly with plenty of opportunity for dipping, then Raising Cane’s checks the boxes.
While not every state has as many Raising Cane’s restaurants as Texas, the chain does have more than 800 locations in 41 states, so there’s a good chance you can snag some for yourself during the Super Bowl.
Fans eagerly awaiting both the game and its accompanying commercials can snag an advance viewing of the Uber Eats commercial with McConaughey here — and you’ll probably need to watch it a few times to catch the endless number of cameos from people ranging from Greta Gerwig to Kevin Bacon.
