Man charged with detonating explosive device outside of Alabama AG’s office

A man was arrested and charged Wednesday with detonating an explosive outside the Alabama Attorney General’s Office in February, the Department of Justice announced.

Prosecutors said Kyle Calvert, a 26-year-old from Alabama, detonated a small explosive device at about 3:45 a.m. outside the office in Montgomery on Feb. 27. No injuries or property damage were reported.

He was charged with malicious use of an explosive and possession of an unregistered destructive device.

“Thanks to the work of the FBI and our state and local law enforcement partners, this defendant is being held accountable for allegedly detonating an explosive device outside of the Alabama Attorney General’s Office,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. “The Justice Department has no tolerance for acts of violence targeting those who serve the public.”

If convicted, Calvert could face a sentence of between five and 20 years in prison.
