Kremlin: Trump foreign policy ‘largely aligns’ with our vision
Russia said President Trump’s foreign policy “largely aligns” with its vision.
“The new administration is rapidly changing all foreign policy configurations,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, according to Russian state media. “This largely aligns with our vision.”
His remarks come just days after Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met to sign a rare earth minerals deal, which would be a step toward ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
The meeting, however, ended in a shouting match between Zelensky, Trump and Vice President Vance, shocking the international community after weeks of growing hostility from Trump over Ukraine’s handling of the war.
Trump's embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin as he talks of ending the war in Ukraine has raised concerns and essentially sidelined Ukraine in peace talks, prompting Zelensky to push for the White House meeting.
European leaders quickly met with Zelensky over the weekend, working to support the president and his country, and find a new way forward without the U.S.
Peskov said the Trump administration’s approach could bring new progress between Washington and Moscow, after years of being iced out and placed under Biden-era sanctions for the war.
“There is a long way to go because a lot of damage has been done to the whole complex of bilateral relations,” he said, per The Washington Post. “But if the political will of the two leaders, President Putin and President Trump, is maintained, this path can be quite quick and successful.”
The meeting between Zelensky, Trump and Vance exploded when the U.S. leaders accused the Ukrainian president of not being grateful for the aid given since the start of the war. In his remarks Sunday, Peskov also slammed the leader and said Zelensky “does not want peace.”
