How much snow has fallen near you? Use this interactive map to track totals

Another winter storm has dropped more snow over several states in the central and southeastern portion of the country Wednesday, with more in the forecast for Thursday.

The National Weather Service said in its Thursday morning forecast the storm is continuing to track northeastward away from the Mid-Atlantic coast, with accumulating snowfall expected to come to an end across Virginia and North Carolina's eastern shores but not before dumping several inches of snow on Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.

“Instability associated with an upper-level trough ahead of the core of the arctic air will bring a swath of light snow and snow showers across the central Appalachians and portions of the Mid-Atlantic states today with a few inches of accumulation possible across eastern West Virginia,” the weather service said Thursday.

“Meanwhile, lake-effect snows will continue into Friday, especially over the lower Great lakes before a warming trend sets in by the weekend,” forecasters said.

While snow piled up in the Mid-Atlantic region, cold weather advisories stretched across two thirds of the country, from Montana to Texas and the Florida Panhandle. As the Arctic air settles into the South, meteorologists expect many record-breaking low temperatures through the second half of the week.

School districts opted to cancel class or switch to virtual learning throughout the eastern U.S. and as far west as Oklahoma, citing dangerously low temperatures and treacherous travel conditions.
