How Amal Clooney Got Her Sophia Loren-Style Glam in Venice
The Venice Film Festival has been giving us old-school Italian glamour since 1932—and Amal Clooney’s appearance on the red carpet at a Cartier event last night (she was in town supporting husband George’s film Wolfs) was no exception. Glam god Dimitris Giannetos was on hand for Clooney’s hair and makeup, and here shares all the details with Vogue exclusively.
“We wanted to give her a classic Italian look,” Giannetos says. “I couldn’t think of better inspiration than Sophia Loren. A big bouncy blowout and shimmery bronzy makeup was perfect.” The process began before Clooney even landed on the Lido: “I gave Amal gorgeous caramel highlights using L’oreal Paris Le Color Gloss in Honey Blonde.” From there, he applied the Garnier Fructis Hair Filler Serum to keep her hair glossy and full.
When it came to makeup, Giannetos says only Charlotte Tilbury would do—and Clooney’s wearing a full face of it. The bronzy shadows and super-long lashes made the look, and Giannetos used a few coats of the Exagger-eyes Volumizing and Curling Mascara to pull it off. The glam was complete with a swipe of Hot Lips in shade Super Cindy (an ode to another icon, Cindy Crawford) and a dress by American designer Bach Mai. As the Italians say, amore.
