Encapsulated Nails Are Perfect For Maximalists

It’s no secret that nail art has come a long way over the years. While a singular color used to be the norm, now, it’s much more common to see people sporting out-of-the-box designs. While there are always occasions where neutral nails reign supreme, this year, we’re embracing the maximalist mindset. More is more.

The latest trend making the rounds on social media that we’ve been drooling over is encapsulated nails. The design allows the wearer to get as creative as they want, but be warned — a full set will most likely require the help of a professional.

What Are Encapsulated Nails?

“Encapsulated nails refer to a technique where decorative elements such as dried flowers, glitter, or any type of embellishment you love, are featured between layers of translucent or clear gel,” Jan Arnold, cofounder of CND, tells POPSUGAR.

While the trend is similar to milk-bath nails, the main difference is that the gel used is translucent, not opaque. You can use colored gels that are sheer, but the style steers clear of milky shades.

When it comes to the embellishments, you can opt for anything you like. “You can get creative since the trend mostly focuses on making the nail-art element appear as if it’s floating,” Mazz Hanna, CEO of Nailing Hollywood, says.

While the trend will work on any nail shape and length, remember that longer nails leave more room to play with. Additionally, “It’s best to opt for a shape that matches the aesthetic you’re going for,” Hanna says. “If your nail-art design is soft and feminine, you may want to go with a rounder shape. If you want to rock something edgier, opt for a long coffin or square shape.”

How to Get Encapsulated Nails

Regular nail polish will not work for this trend so we recommend booking an appointment at the salon. “You’re going to want an acrylic or gel base for the best results,” Lonna Janee, V Beauty Pure educator, says. “Whatever you’re encapsulating will be placed on top of a base layer, then covered with a layer of clear acrylic or a medium of your choice.”

Janee says there are quite a few elements that require special care. For example, your nail artist will need to make sure the layers of gel aren’t too thick or too thin. That being said, it’s important to arrive at the nail salon with inspiration photos in hand, and it might even help to call ahead in order to make sure the salon can accommodate your request.

Another thing to note is that encapsulated nails will take some time to achieve. On average, plan for a full set to take anywhere from 90 to 120 minutes.
