Deadbeach Beerfest, Science Festival, Grease musical, racing top things to do in El Paso

José Hernandez, a NASA astronaut and former migrant farmworker, will be the featured guest of the El Paso Science Festival this weekend at the El Paso Convention Center. The event is free to attend.

Deadbeach Brewery will celebrate craft beers in Central El Paso with its Borderland Beerfest.

Other fun things to do this weekend include the Big El Paso Fair at Ascarate Park, a ghost tour in San Elizario and garden tours at the UTEP Centennial Museum.

It's the final weekend for live horse racing at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino. Top horses will compete in several top quarter horse and thoroughbred stakes races.

Here is a closer look at things to do in the El Paso area this weekend.

El Paso Science Festival

The El Paso Science Festival, featuring astronaut Jose Hernandez, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6, at the El Paso convention center. Admission is free.

San Elizario ghosts of the Camino Real

Investigate with Ghosts915-Paso Del Norte Paranormal Society and tour the Old El Paso County Jail Museum and other buildings in San Elizario from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 4. Meet at the San Elizario Placita. Tickets are $25 and available online.

Chihuahuan Desert Gardens Tour

The UTEP Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens are available for a tour from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5. The tour is organized by the Native Plant Society of New Mexico El Paso chapter. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for coffee and socializing, followed by business meetings at 10 a.m. Following the business meetings, Kevin Floyd will give a brief overview of the exhibit “Cultivating Your Home: Embracing Chihuahuan Desert Diversity.” Tours to follow.

Deadbeach plans Borderland Beerfest

Deadbeach Brewery, 3200 Durazno Ave., will hold its Borderland Beerfest from noon to 11 p.m. Saturday, April 5. Come enjoy beers from all over the city, state and region. There will be live bands, DJs, Upper Valley Artist Market vendors, food trucks and more. All ages are welcome.

UTEP Dinner Theatre takes on ‘Grease' musical

The UTEP Dinner Theater will present the musical “Grease” from Friday, April 4, to May 4. Many performances will be at 6:30 p.m., with 2 p.m. performances on Sundays. Tickets, which range from $54 to $58, plus fees, are available at Ticketmaster.com.

Punk Rock Panel with Jim Ward

Jim Ward of Sparta and formerly of At the Drive-In will participate in a Punk Rock Panel discussion April 5 at Eloise Restaurant on the West Side.

El Paso Community College will continue the Chuco Punk Rock, Communities of Sound series with a Punk Rock Panel and Discussion: Reflections on Chuco Punk from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at Eloise Restaurant, 126 Shadow Mountain Drive, Suite A.

Marina Monsisvais will facilitate this local panel of former and current punk rock musicians and promoters, including Jim Ward of Sparta and formerly of At the Drive-In, Bobbie Welch, and Tony Leal, to learn about their lived experiences in this culture. The event is free and open to the public.

Big El Paso Fair returns to Ascarate Park

The Big El Paso Fair returns to El Paso with carnival games and rides through Sunday, April 13, at Ascarate Park. Hours will be 5 to 11 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 1 p.m. to midnight Saturday and Sunday. General admission is $7.50 if purchased online at www.bigelpasofair.com and $15 at the gate. Get SuperSaver tickets for $25 from Walgreens stores.

Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino

The final weekend of the 2025 horse racing meet will be a big one at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino. On Saturday, the 300-yard West Texas Futurity 2025 for 2-year-old quarter horses. On Sunday, the thoroughbreds take over with the Sunland Park Handicap, the Mine That Bird Derby and the New Mexico State University stakes. The first post time is 12:25 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
