Cowgirl Bob Haircut Trend, Explained by a Pro

In May, Megan Fox debuted what her hairstylist, Dimitris Giannetos, referred to as a “cowgirl bob.” A continuation of the short haircut that has taken over in the last few years, Fox’s style was trendy, airy, and decidedly perfect for summer. Since then, searches for the look have skyrocketed, with people clamoring to learn how to get the look.

“This haircut is all about texture, from the way that it’s cut to the finished style,” hairstylist Adam Federico tells PS. If you’ve been contemplating a bob but want something different than all of the Hailey Bieber-esque versions that are currently on your “For You” pages or are ready to step into your horse girl era á la Beyoncé and Bella Hadid, Federico explains everything you should know about the cowgirl bob, including what to ask for at the salon, ahead.

What Is a Cowgirl Bob?

The hairstyle is inspired in part by the flirty nature of the coquette beauty trend that’s currently having a moment. “It’s a modern twist on a classic,” Federico says. “The style typically features blunt ends with minimal layering and a bit of wave or curl, giving it a laid-back, country-inspired vibe.” In short, the style looks effortless, slightly tousled, and super lived-in. Think I-just-woke-up-after-a-fresh-blowout hair but better. Of course, one feature characteristic is its length — the bob typically ends just at or above the shoulders.

How to Get a Cowgirl Bob

As with any new style you want to try, your best bet is to bring a picture to the salon for reference. Still, there are a few directions that you can give your stylist to help the process along. First, you’ll want to have your hair cut into your preferred bob length. “Tell your stylist you want long layers and the length of the haircut to have a very broken texture,” Federico says. This adds to the fullness of the style and makes your hair look super healthy. While Fox opted for bangs, you don’t have to do that if you don’t want to. However, if you do, make sure they’re piecey and layered for that effortless feel.

What to Consider If You Have Textured Hair

If you have curly or coily hair, there are a few things to consider about this trend. “People with textured hair should note that this look is achievable, but it will require more time and energy with styling to blow out their natural texture,” Federico says. To note, if you typically wear your hair in its naturally curly state, it’s likely best to get your hair cut and styled while it’s curly; that way, shrinkage won’t affect how your hair looks when straightened.
