Céline Dion Makes a Triumphant Return at the Grammys

It was the surprise nobody saw coming: At tonight’s Grammy Awards, beloved superstar Celine Dion took the main stage to present Taylor Swift with the Album of the Year award. The unexpected appearance marked the French-Canadian singer’s first awards show appearance since being diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome (SPS) back in 2022, a rare neurological disease that’s said to affect as few as one in a million people. “When I say that I’m happy to be here, I really mean it, from my heart,” Dion said on stage. “Those who have been blessed enough to be here at the Grammy awards must never take for granted the tremendous love and joy that music brings to our lives, and to people all around the world.”

Over the past two years, Dion has quietly stepped away from the spotlight as she continues to grapple with her SPS disorder, which can cause muscle stiffness and painful spasms. “Unfortunately, the spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal chords to sing the way I’m used to,” Dion said in an Instagram video to her fans. As a result of the rare disorder, Dion cancelled all of her 2024 tour dates while she focuses on her physical health.

But at tonight’s Grammys, Dion triumphantly returned to life in the spotlight, and she did so by reviving one of her many talents in the process: Being a style icon, of course. Working with stylist Law Roach—who worked with Dion back in 2016 and helped cement her status as fashion darling —the star emerged wearing an elegant Valentino couture camel coat for the occasion, styled overtop a pink chiffon dress (also by Valentino) and dazzling crystal necklace. The crowd, understandably, met Dion with rapturous applause.

Dion’s Grammys appearance tonight was arguably the night’s most heartwarming spotting, though it isn’t the only moment that fans have to look forward to. Last month, it was announced that an upcoming documentary—titled I Am: Céline Dion—will soon come to Amazon Prime; The film will trace the singer’s life in music, while also raising awareness about those living with SPS. Welcome back Celine, we’ve missed you!
