Writer-Loved Kitchen Tools on Sale for the Fourth of July

Most of my days are spent in the kitchen, where I’m either cooking for fun or testing gadgets for work. It’s a rewarding job that involves a lot of delicious food, so no complaints here. With so much time spent behind a stove, I’ve become the go-to resource for friends and families on the hunt for new kitchen equipment. It’s a side hustle that turns into a full-time job in the summer with Amazon Prime Day and Fourth of July sales on the horizon. To make my life easier, I compiled a list of seven tools that see quite a bit of use in my home. John Boos Block Platinum Series Large Reversible Wooden Cutting Board 

John Boos’ wooden cutting boards are loved by celebrity chefs and all of us here at Food & Wine. The brand combines a (somewhat) affordable price with a striking design that will never go out of style. I’m a fan of this board in particular because it’s reversible, so I can cut vegetables on one side and serve prosciutto and crackers on the other. I wash mine by hand, oil it about once a month, and keep it dry in the hope that it will last for years to come.

I’m typically opposed to single-use gadgets because I don’t like clutter, but I’ve enjoyed using the corn cob stripper I got as a present more than I thought I would. Yes, a knife can do the same thing, but this tool makes the process faster, safer, and easier. I can’t imagine not having this in my drawer now. 

Shun Classic Blonde Nakiri Knife 

I use my Japanese-made nakiri knife daily to chop vegetables. The shape of the blade encourages an up-and-down motion that’s different from the rocking cut that most Western knives are designed to accommodate. Even though it feels less fluid, I love the precision and heft of the blade, which lends itself perfectly to breaking down large sweet potatoes and small radishes alike. 

Heraclea Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Bundle 

Olive oil, especially extra-virgin olive oil, is expensive, which is why I like to stock up when sales hit. Heraclea’s duo is a great find since it offers two bottles for just $15 apiece. Both are cold-pressed, but that’s where the similarities end. I eat a lot of leftovers during the week, so I need a healthy stock of food storage containers to keep them organized and accessible. It’s an essential tool during summer’s warm months, meaning it sees almost weekly use in my kitchen. I love that I can retain the grill’s signature smoke and char without accidentally sacrificing food to flames.

Cuisinart Large Salad Spinner 

A salad spinner is a game-changer for summer produce. Watch it wash away layers of dirt from your farmers market butterhead lettuce before drying each individual leaf quickly and thoroughly. One Amazon shopper has officially said goodbye to “wet and soggy salad[s]” after buying this popular Cuisinart spinner.
