10 Best Packable Winter Jackets on Sale

If I wasn’t a travel writer, I’d be a magician. Much like they can hide white rabbits in hats, I can pull hefty winter parkas right out of my purse. I do it a lot on planes, and while I’ve yet to receive a standing ovation for the act, I’ve had plenty of seatmates ask me how I did it. Here’s the secret to my trick: I travel with packable, compressible down jackets. These jackets have the highest warmth-to-weight ratio thanks to their filling and lightweight materials, making them perfect for light packers.

As a travel writer, I’ve tested more than a dozen packable down jackets. While some of my favorites are of the premium, goose-down-filled variety (like my Mammut Eigerjoch Advanced In Hooded Jacket and this Fjallraven Expedition Pack Down Hoodie), there are options for every need and budget. Ready to experience the magic of these travel-friendly jackets for yourself? See below for 10 of my favorite, on-sale packable down jackets that will seamlessly fit in your carry-on, featuring brands and retailers like REI, The North Face, Eddie Bauer, and more. Get ready to save up to 65 percent on these amazing layers.

Amazon Essentials Women's Lightweight Packable Puffer Jacket

Amazon

On sale for just $33, this affordable outer layer is a relatively low-risk investment that’s made its way into my own jacket rotation. I own it in black, but it also comes in 15 other shades, each accompanied by a matching stuff sack. While it’s not the most technical jacket on this list, it’s plenty warm, lightweight, and made to last. Nearly 16,000 five-star ratings back me up: “This coat has been on so many trips, been squished up, shoved into tight bags, thrown around, washed many times, and zipped up and down and is still holding strong,” one reviewer wrote, calling it “the perfect travel coat.”

Wantdo Women's Hooded Packable Down Jacket

Amazon

If you want a hooded packable puffer that costs less than $100, consider this down jacket, on sale for $53. Yielding over 13,000 five-star ratings, this Wantdo jacket has four pockets and is easy to store, thanks to the supplied carrying pouch. When packed away, this jacket becomes compact enough to fit nicely in a backpack or even a large handbag. One Florida-based shopper who bought this jacket for a winter trip to Boston called it “one of the most practical things I’ve ever bought,” while another traveler who took it on vacation in Switzerland found it to be very warm, “even at the top of a 10,000-foot mountain in the middle of winter.”

The North Face Women’s Plus-sized 1996 Retro Nuptse Down Jacket

The North Face

Founded in 1966, outdoor authority The North Face has been making packable puffers long before the phrase was in most of our lexicons. Thanks to its throwback design and oversized fit, this goose-down jacket (also available in men’s sizes and straight sizes) isn’t just a functional staple’s a fashion statement. One shopper who bought it for a Paris trip reported that it “fits perfectly,” while another shared that it’s “very warm, stylish, and comfortable.” For easy packing, simply stow it away in its zippered right hand pocket. Bonus: The hood can be removed for a different look.

Eddie Bauer

Eddie Bauer spared no expense — nor attention to detail — on the new MicroTherm 2.0 Jacket (also on sale in men’s). It’s insulated with premium loft goose down and features the brand’s most durable moisture-repelling finish. FP Movement In A Pillow Water-resistant Anorak

Zappos

The Fjallraven Expedition Pack Down Anorak is my all-time favorite packable pullover, but if you can’t wait for it to go on sale, treat yourself to this anorak option from Free People Movement. It comes in two colors and has a water-resistant nylon exterior that’s filled with 100 percent washable polyester. You’ll stay nice and toasty with the drawstring hood, and the half-zip closure ensures you won’t overheat. During transit, you can stash it in its oversized front flap pocket to use it as a travel pillow.

REI Co-op Women's Insulated Trailmade Hoodie

REI

If you can spare $249, I highly recommend investing in the REI Co-op Magma 850 Down Hoodie, the brand’s lightest and most technical down hoodie. If not, you won’t regret this other top-rated REI Co-op packable puffer. Made with synthetic insulation, it’s currently marked down to $60 in the shade Iron Oxide-Sunfade Clay. I love the look of the contrasting turquoise zippers, and shoppers say it’s the “perfect midweight jacket.” Note: It doesn’t pack down into any of its pockets, but that’s just the perfect excuse to add this REI Co-op Durable Stuff Sack to your cart, too.

Marmot Men’s WarmCube Active Novus Hoodie

REI

I rocked the women’s version of this jacket all over Europe while studying abroad 15 years ago. I’m happy to see Marmot still makes it and I’m even happier to see it on sale. Featuring 3D WarmCube technology, it’s the brand’s lightest synthetic down hoody. The unique cubed quilt design traps heat to keep you cozy when you’re standing still, while the gusseted underarms give you a full range of motion when it’s time to go. Made with a cinching drawcord waist and zippered hand-warming pockets, this packable puffer jacket is $75 off while supplies last.

Quince Lightweight Down Packable Puffer Jacket

Quince

wear my Quince Mongolian cashmere hoodie like a second skin, so I have confidence that the brand’s down jackets are just as cozy. This particular puffer consists of a water- and wind-resistant polyester shell filled with premium goose down. The hem is adjustable, and the internal chest pocket converts into a stuff sack. One shopper said that it “looks far more expensive than it actually is,” while another shopper said they can’t wear it out in public without receiving compliments.

Michael Kors Belted Packable Long Puffer Jacket

Nordstrom

With its removable faux fur collar and cinched belt, this thigh-length Michael Kors puffer looks like it came straight off the catwalk. This machine-washable jacket is filled with warm, synthetic down, and comes in two shades: black and admiral navy. It features two ultra-deep front zip pockets to keep your items secure, and the full-zip front helps to keep the cold at bay. Although it’s certainly “packable,” it doesn’t come with its own stuff sack — but you can score this Sea to Summit mesh stuff sack while it’s on sale at Amazon for just $7.
