Zooey Deschanel Shares Her Genius Packing Tip, a Sweet Memory From Filming ‘Elf,’ and More
Zooey Deschanel actually loves packing for a trip — and for frequent travelers, she has the best — and most simple — hack for never stressing out about it.
“I usually have a bag 90 percent packed at all times,” she told Travel + Leisure in a recent interview. “I’ve got all the things that I need in a bag all set so that I don’t have to think about it. I know I’m always going to need a pair of glasses, my contact lenses, a pair of sunglasses, a little first aid kit, my makeup, my toiletries, so might as well just have those already in there so I’m not going, ‘What did I forget?'”
By essentially always being packed, it eliminates any last-minute debacles, especially when she is packing for her two children as well, she mentioned.
“After remembering everything for everyone, it’s a lot. So it really pays to be organized and think ahead,” she said.

Window or aisle seat?
Window.
Which “Elf” character would be the best to travel with?
Jovie is probably pretty good to talk to.
Which “New Girl” character would be the best to travel with?
I think probably Schmidt because he’s organized. He would wear his plane moccasins.
When do you arrive for the airport?
My preference is right on time but I’d rather be early than late. I got into a situation last year where I was traveling by myself. I was going to Europe. It was a new terminal that had just been redone in LAX, and I was sitting in the lounge, and I missed the announcement. Then it turned out I had a 15 minute walk, and I literally was running with my bag full speed. I ran on the plane and got there right before it closed. That is just not my personality at all. I’ve never missed a plane. So, yeah, I’d rather wait by the gate.
Go-to plane activity?
I love to watch movies on the plane.
And the drive to be organized and well-packed created the perfect partnership with iconic purse and bag company Vera Bradley. Known for its signature paisley and prints, Deschanel’s campaign is all about a new era with some elevated and neutral styles.
The revamped collection features handbags, luggage, scarves and other packable accessories, including leather pieces. And for a traveler like Deschanel, she appreciates the brand’s details that make life simple — including the luggage sleeve on a backpack.
“What they kind of cut their teeth on was making these practical bags, with lots of pockets, that are just great for traveling,” she said, noting that the updated versions still have all the great characteristics of the original designs.
In addition to having the perfect travel bag from Vera Bradley, Deschanel’s other packing tips include sticking with a capsule wardrobe and not bringing anything outside the ordinary.
“I think we all take trips and come back and go, ‘Why did I bring that? Like, I didn’t wear it once.’ You have some imaginary version of yourself on vacation that wears some special thing that is just not practical, right? I always say, if it’s not comfortable, you’re not going to wear it.”
She also leaves items that take up valuable space — like super long dresses or multiple pairs of shoes — at home. She suggests bringing a pair of Vans or Superga sneakers that you can wear for style, but also do a simple gym work out in so you aren’t weighed down. Deschanel also loves ballet flats as a very packable shoe.
Though she doesn’t have any travel plans for the holidays, Deschanel is excited about spending this season at home. Engaged to Property Brothers host Jonathan Scott, she shared her enthusiasm for this time of year.
“I love the holidays. Love the decor, love the baking, singing Christmas carols. I love the whole thing,” she told T+L.
Which may come as no surprise as many people equate Deschanel with the beloved 2003 holiday film “Elf.” (She also has a Christmas album with her band She & Him released in 2011.) Deschanel looks back fondly on being in one of the most adored Christmas movies of all time, especially working with Will Ferrell in his iconic role of Buddy the Elf.
“I remember being on set and we were doing that ice skating scene, and Will was putting on his ice skates, and he was just talking to everybody. And I was like,’This guy doesn’t know he’s famous!’ He is so nice. He’s such a nice person.”
As for where Buddy and Deschanel’s character Jovie would be today? “They live in the North and oversee Santa’s workshop with their giant children,” she said.
