Warner Bros. (NASDAQ:WBD) is inching toward a deal with author J.K. Rowling that would bring a long-discussed TV series based on the best-selling Harry Potter franchise to HBO Max, according to media reports.
That show would adapt each of the seven original novels in the series into a season of TV, Bloomberg said — and the longer runtime would allow for more time to delve into the Wizarding World than the movies had.
A Harry Potter series would check a box off the wishlist of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) CEO David Zaslav, who said he wanted to tap the company’s intellectual-property strengths and Potter in particular: Last November he said “we’re going to have a real focus on franchises … We haven’t done a Harry Potter movie in 15 years. The DC movies and the Harry Potter movies provided a lot of the profits of Warner Bros. motion pictures over the last 25 years. So focus on the franchise.”
But such a show couldn’t move forward without the support of Rowling, who wrote the seven books and is reportedly in talks to join in as a producer.
