President Trump insisted late Sunday that Iran’s nuclear sites have been destroyed, disputing Tehran’s messaging that the Fordow site was not demolished.
“Monumental Damage was done to all Nuclear sites in Iran, as shown by satellite images. Obliteration is an accurate term! The white structure shown is deeply imbedded into the rock, with even its roof well below ground level, and completely shielded from flame,” the president said on Truth Social.
“The biggest damage took place far below ground level. Bullseye!!!” he added.
U.S. strikes on Saturday hit three nuclear sites in Iran, including the Fordow nuclear plant that is located deep in a mountain south of Tehran and was targeted with bunker buster bombs.
Trump on Sunday night described the bombings on the Iranian nuclear sites as a “spectacular military success” and called on Tehran to make a peace deal quickly while warning it would face more attacks.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Manan Raisi, a member of Iran's parliament from Qom, which is near Fordow, said that the site was not seriously damaged, Reuters reported.
Joint Chiefs Chair Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine on Sunday told reporters at the Pentagon that there was severe damage at the facility and did not use the term “obliteration.”
“Final battle damage will take some time, but initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction,” Caine said.
The Trump administration has signaled it wants to contain the conflict and prevent an all-out war with Iran, but has insisted that Tehran can’t have a nuclear weapon. Officials have also signaled they are hopeful Iran will return to the negotiating table but questions remain on Monday morning about Iran’s response.
