Being from the Midwest, I’ve probably heard — and told — all the jokes about cornfields that are out there. (Look, cows!) Funnily enough, the first thing I find myself craving when warmer weather rolls around is a snappy, tangy, and refreshing corn salad. I’ve adored corn ever since I was a kid, and have experimented with it in dishes like tacos with sweet corn relish and basil-and-corn cornmeal waffles.
The thing is, those pesky corn kernels are so dang hard to strip off the cob. Sure, I could pick up a bag of frozen corn kernels and save some time in the kitchen, but my famous spicy elote smash tacos just don’t taste as good without succulent, fresh kernels straight off the ear. I talked to three different chefs, and every one of them recommended the same tool — the OXO Good Grips Corn Peeler.

With this clever corn peeler, you can strip a whole ear of corn in seconds without dangerously fumbling with multiple bowls and knives at once. To use it, simply hold the corb cob on a flat surface and run the mouth of the peeler under the kernels — you’ll have all the corn you need in no time.
“It glides down the cob without much pressure, so you get whole kernels without tearing or mashing them,” says Dennis Littley, chef and recipe expert at Ask Chef Dennis. ‘’When you’re working through a lot of ears at once, especially in prep for things like corn chowder or succotash, having a dedicated tool like this really saves time and effort.” He also notes that it’s a great gadget for home cooks, as it keeps kernels from flying across the counter.
Theo Friedman, chef and associate director of projects at The Culinary Edge, says that this tool “makes the job quite quick.” The non-slip, ergonomically shaped handle and curved head also make for comfortable use, protecting your wrist from strain while shearing. Plus, the stainless steel blade makes this tool dishwasher-safe and rust-resistant. Thomas Odermatt, Chef and Founder of Butcher’s Bone Broth, gave one tip that rang like music in my summer corn-loving ears: “The fresher the corn, the easier it is!”
Grab this $10 chef-approved tool to indulge in corn dishes aplenty this summer — I know my partner and I are about to make our best batch of elote tacos yet.
