The Best Resorts in Mexico of 2024

With miles of sun-drenched coastline, verdant jungles, rich history and culture, and some of the best beaches in the world, Mexico always makes a fine vacation choice.

It’s also where you’ll find incredible hotels that routinely earn honors on T+L’s World’s Best Awards and It List, ranging from boutique stays centered around sustainability and design to pampering luxury resorts with private pools and deeply rejuvenating spas.

For this reason — and the easy, relatively affordable flights from the U.S. — it’s one of my favorite places to visit, whether on a romantic jaunt with my husband to captivating Mayakoba or ancient Tulum, or with kids in tow to gorgeous Punta de Mita or lively Puerto Vallarta. There’s a city, beach, and hotel to suit all interests, the hardest part is picking just one. We’ve rounded up the best resorts in Mexico based on first-hand experience, as well as editor-loved and T+L award-winning properties.

Why I’m the Expert

She’s stayed in and reviewed hotels in each of these locations, including some on this list, and specializes in curating the best resorts around the world. She is confident that these are the very best hotels you can book in Mexico.

Nestled in a tranquil cove that also happens to be swimmable — a rarity in Cabo where most beaches are closed to swimmers due to steep drop-offs and strong undercurrents — Chileno Bay Resort & Residences’ location alone makes it one of the best places to stay in the region.

Though the draw of this T+L World’s Best Awards winner in 2021, 2022, and 2023 goes beyond soft sand and shimmering turquoise waters. An airy, open aesthetic carries throughout the resort, anchored by a central saltwater infinity pool, beachfront dining, a stellar spa and wellness program, and bright, contemporary rooms inspired by the Baja coast. Alluring for couples, families will also love the kids and teen clubs and assortment of on-site activities.

I stayed in 2019 for their Día de los Muertos celebration — an amazing time to visit because San Miguel de Allende’s parade launches from the Rosewood. It’s a stylish hotel with a beautiful pool, and its rooftop bar has live music and possibly the best view in the city.

Guest room in Maroma.

Courtesy of Belmond Hotels

What We Like
  • All stays come with a cocktail upon arrival, complimentary fresh fruit, morning coffee, turndown service, and soft drinks from the in-room bar.

Wedged between 200 acres of emerald jungle and thick mangroves on one side and the glistening Caribbean Sea on the other, Maroma is a T+L It List Winner for 2024 that recently underwent a top-to-bottom renovation.

There are 72 well-appointed rooms and suites, including villas with private pools and a wellness suite with chimes, fitness equipment, in-room yoga, and aromatherapy. Wellness in particular features prominently, from the nature-focused Guerlain-branded spa to the palm tree-lined pools, on-site apothecary, and unique experiences such as underwater meditation, guided jungle walks, and honeybee therapy.

According to T+L Editor-in-chief Jacqueline Gifford, “Mexican architect Jose Luis Moreno was scouting for a home by plane when he first saw the 200-acre piece of land that would eventually become Maroma, the Riviera Maya’s first luxury resort, which opened in 1995. By 2021, the white stucco property, by then part of the Belmond group, was ready for a glow-up. After a two-year closure and $45 million design overhaul by London-based Tara Bernerd & Partners, Maroma now fully channels the joy of Mexico. Some 700,000 clay tiles were sourced from Jalisco for the 72 rooms and suites, but strategic pops of yellow — on an umbrella by the saltwater pool or woven into loaner guest caftans by female artisans in Chiapas — are what caught my eye. Chef Curtis Stone crafts a menu of fire-roasted meats and seafood at Woodend, while at Casa Mayor, executive chef Daniel Camacho sources 90 percent of his ingredients from within Mexico, including surprises such as a regional coffee of the day. (I loved the beans from Veracruz.)”

The Details:

  • Location: Punta Maroma (between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen)
  • Accessibility: There is one dedicated ADA-compliant room, Deluxe Ocean View Room #29. Public areas can also be adapted for ADA guests by putting in a ramp including at venues such as Casa Mayor, Freddy’s Bar, Bambuco, the beach, and main pool area.
  • Loyalty Programs: None
  • Parking: Parking is included.
  • Pet Policy: Small dogs and cats under 18 pounds are welcome with a $200 fee.
  • Rates: From $725

The electric-white beach is still the main draw, but when you need a break from the sunshine, a small-batch tequila and raicilla tasting in the private cantina awaits.

Also available to book at Tripadvisor.com

What We Like
  • The Conrad is ideal for relaxation and solitude but it’s also a gem for families with a great kids pool, lawn games, and free meals for children.

What to Consider
  • The location is a bit remote, about an hour from Puerto Vallarta, which is also the closest airport.

I checked into this hotel for a babymoon with my husband — and our 2-year-old toddler. We all loved the gorgeous location along a quiet, wide white-sand beach and there are multiple infinity pools including a large lagoon-shaped infinity pool overlooking the ocean, a secluded adults-only pool, and a zero-entry family pool with a water slide and splash pad.

The perks for families at this T+L 2023 World’s Best Awards winner are immense, even while maintaining a refined, upscale air. There’s a complimentary kids club and all children under 12 eat for free when accompanied by a paying adult. There are also several well-curated boutiques — I did the best shopping of my trip at the hotel alone — a spa, varied on-site dining, and polished rooms such as the one-bedroom suite I stayed in with a walk-in shower, separate living room, and large terrace with a private plunge pool.

The Details:

  • Location: Punta de Mita
  • Accessibility: The hotel has a selection of accessible rooms with wider doorways, bathroom grab bars, lowered fixtures, and other features. The hotel itself also has wheelchair-friendly pathways and ramps, elevators, accessible parking, pool access, and accessible restaurants and facilities like the spa and fitness center.
  • Loyalty Programs: Hilton Honors
  • Parking: Valet parking is complimentary.
  • Pet Policy: One pet per reservation is allowed with a $50 fee.

Private patio at Roseood Mayakoba.

Also available to book at Expedia.com

Tucked away in a remote setting between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, surrounded by emerald jungle is Mayakoba, a sleek gated complex of four high-end hotels, residences, and championship golf.

The crown jewel of the compound is Rosewood Mayakoba, a T+L World’s Best Awards winner in 2021, 2022, and 2023 that is a cocoon for indulgent luxury with butler service — expect personalized embroidered pillowcases — and rooms overlooking either a winding lagoon or a pristine beach. While you may initially gravitate to the latter, many of the lagoon-view rooms are overwater villas surrounded by stunning scenery and come with private plunge pools and outdoor showers. There are also several elegant dining venues, four pools, a plushly-outfitted beach area, and a magnificent spa.

For T+L Senior Editorial Director Nina Ruggiero, the Rosewood Mayakoba is a property she returns to again and again. “I stayed here in 2017, 2020, and 2021. It’s one of my favorite hotels. Arriving to your room by boat starts every trip on a high note. Beachfront and lagoon suites offer completely different experiences — and really, you should try both. Either way, you’ll enjoy a private plunge pool, indoor-outdoor shower, and personalized butler service. All of the restaurants are great, but don’t forget to hit the Aqui Me Quedo beachfront food truck…I will forever dream of its shrimp tacos,” she shares.

The Details:

  • Location: Mayakoba
  • Accessibility: The majority of suites and villas are equipped to accommodate guests with disabilities and can be customized to meet specific needs.
  • Loyalty Programs: None
  • Parking: Valet parking is free.

Private Villa at Andaz Mayakoba.

Courtesy of Hyatt

Also available to book at Tripadvisor.com

What We Like
  • A central lagoon connects Andaz with the Rosewood, Banyan Tree, and Fairmont Mayakoba hotels and no matter where you stay, you can travel by hotel boat or town car to dine at the other properties and charge a meal or service back to your room.

If the exclusivity of Mayakoba beckons but the nightly rate of the Rosewood — routinely in the thousands — feels too high, or you have Hyatt loyalty points to redeem, the Andaz Mayakoba is hardly a compromise. I stayed here and felt quite pampered by the sophisticated ambiance, excellent dining, and gleamingly modern, spacious rooms with views of the Caribbean Sea, lagoon, or golf course, plus spa-like bathrooms, vibrant design accents, and in some cases, private plunge pools.

The sprawling layout meant that no matter how crowded, the hotel felt intimate and approachable, from the multiple sparkling pools to the calming spa, beautiful beach, and meandering paths. Grab a provided bike to explore or hop a ride aboard the hotel’s boat for an eco tour of the Mayakoba lagoon.

The Details:

  • Location: Mayakoba
  • Accessibility: Parking, registration, public restrooms, swimming pools, fitness center, restaurants, concierge, public entrance, and a business center are all accessible. The Andaz Suite is ADA accessible and has lowered entryway features including peephole, door latch, thermostat, and light switches; as well as wider bathroom doors, grab bars, raised toilet seat, roll-in shower, accessible terrace, and closed captioning.

  • Parking: Self-parking is complimentary.
  • Pet Policy: One dog under 50 pounds or two dogs with a combined weight of 75 pounds or less are allowed in each room with a fee of $100.
  • Rates: From $242

Facing a large swath of white-sand beach, Mahekal Beach Resort is an oasis of calm just steps from the pulsing beat of Playa Del Carmen. Lounge under thatched roof palapas, sway in a hammock, or sink into a daybed all while overlooking crystal clear waters rolling in.

The T+L World’s Best Awards winner in 2021, 2022, and 2023, the all-inclusive resort offers either a modified plan or full board at six dining venues. Exterior of Waldorf Astoria Cancun.

Courtesy of Hilton

Well located but removed from the noise and frenzy of buzzing Cancun, the Waldorf Astoria, a T+L It List winner in 2023, is a sumptuous spot to unwind. Take in mesmerizing views, dip into two glittering infinity pools, book a holistic treatment at the 21-room indoor/outdoor spa, or indulge in chic dining at five on-site restaurants.

The fine-dining restaurant Malpeque has such treats as Ensenada-sourced baked scallop in the shell served with a chipotle-vermouth sauce and puff pastry casing. Me? I wasn’t straying from my balcony. I ordered fish tacos from room service and spent the evening watching the sunset from my jacuzzi.

Also available to book at Tripadvisor.com

Set between the shores of the Pacific Ocean and rugged mountains of Puerto Escondido, Hotel Terrestre is an eco-conscious, off-the-grid sanctuary operating solely on solar power.

There are 14 villas at this 2023 It List winner, each of which comes with a private pool, outdoor bathroom, hammock-equipped terrace, and a striking earthy palette of wood, brick, and concrete, all infused with the mystical scent of copal. There is also an open-air restaurant, a bathing pool designed for quiet introspection, and a hammam spa with multiple chambers to experience water in different, restorative ways.

This hotel is worth the visit; just take it from T+L Contributor David Amsden, who shares, “Arriving at Hotel Terrestre is a near hallucinogenic experience. One moment you’re bouncing along a dusty road in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, surrounded by nothing but rugged mountains and the emerald churn of the Pacific, and the next you’re entering an improbable dreamscape where high-design refinement merges with a raw, earthy sensibility. Though the rollicking surf town of Puerto Escondido is only 20 miles away, the hotel feels seductively unmoored from time and place, with its grounds of copal trees and 14 rooms built into jagged, Brutalist structures, each with a private rooftop pool. Much as all this is undeniable catnip for social media feeds, the actual experience is lushly analog, with days spent flitting between hammocks and the steam room, hot tub, and cold plunge tucked inside a dramatic temescal. Amble across the road at sunset and you find a beach bar built along a strip of epic coastline so barren that the sight of a dinosaur would hardly be a surprise between sips of mezcal.”

The Details:

  • Location: Puerto Escondido
  • Accessibility: There are no ADA-designated rooms or features, however, the hotel will assist guests with finding the room that best fits their needs.
  • Loyalty Programs: Marriott Bonvoy
  • Parking: On-site parking is complimentary.
  • Pet Policy: Pets are welcome with a fee of $50.
  • Rates: From $416

Know Before You Go

Be aware of hurricane season

According to the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Mexico, Mexico’s hurricane season runs from May through November, with storms typically developing between July and October. During these months, hurricanes may impact both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. For the best weather, and to avoid possible travel disruptions, try to avoid this time period or book with caution and look for flexible policies if you plan on traveling then.

Learn a few words in Spanish

Depending on where you go in Mexico, there will likely always be some level of English spoken, especially when staying in larger brand-name resorts or visiting more touristy areas. Regardless, it’s still polite and helpful to know a few words in the local language, whether that’s a simple hello (hola) or thank you (gracias).

Expect to see seaweed

You may arrive in Mexico expecting unspoiled, picture-perfect white-sand beaches, and in many cases, that is the norm. However, in popular tourist areas along the Yucatán coast like Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, and others, the beach may become piled high with sargassum, a type of seaweed that can also make the water unswimmable. Sargassum is known to accumulate higher in the spring and summer, though I’ve seen it in the winter, too. Hotels do their best to take it off the beach, but know that it may happen and there’s little that can be done.

How We Chose These Hotels

Emily Hochberg is a California-based travel writer and editor who has spent extensive time in Mexico from coast to coast, and applied her in-depth knowledge of the country’s destinations and best hotels to evaluate dozens of properties before choosing the best resorts.

She considered her own personal experience as well, staying at hotels in Puerto Vallarta, Punta de Mita, Mayakoba, and visiting popular areas such as Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, and more. These are the best properties she returns to and recommends to friends, and also factored in elements like location, amenities, design, spacious guest rooms, unique experiences, dining, wellness, swimming pools, and a range of price points.

Additionally, in determining this list, she evaluated customer reviews and accolades, such as our exclusive T+L World’s Best Awards and It List winners.

And finally, as with all our hotel stories, editors ensure all recommendations we make align with our core T+L Hotel Values.
