Sonic’s New Sweet-Topped Lemonades Are Serving Main Character Energy

  • Sonic is launching Sweet-Topped Lemonades in three flavors — Classic, Strawberry, and Blueberry Lavender — starting June 2, with early access for app users on May 27.
  • The drinks feature Sonic’s classic lemonade topped with sweet cold foam, offering a creamy take on the summer classic.
  • Sonic is partnering with romance authors and reaffirming its literacy commitment, tying the launch to its Limeades for Learning initiative and a collaboration with nonprofit First Book.

For better or worse, “dirty soda” — soft drinks with a swirl of sweet cream — dominated our social feeds last year. If you’ve never been tempted to try this viral trend for yourself, perhaps Sonic’s sweet-and-citrusy version will change your mind.

Sonic Drive-In is kicking off summer with an unexpected spin on a seasonal classic: Sweet-Topped Lemonades. This new beverage promises to deliver all the tartness of Sonic’s lemonade recipe topped with a generous serving of sweet cold foam, according to the company’s announcement today.

Three flavors (Classic Lemonade, Strawberry Lemonade, and Blueberry Lavender Lemonade) are coming to the Sonic menus starting next month. This isn’t the first time that Sonic has ventured into creamy, citrusy drinks: Lemonade Cream Coolers, which combine the classic drink with swirls of soft serve, became a permanent menu item last summer. Their latest launch, however, is a bit less indulgent.

Eager to get your hands on the newest Sweet-Topped Lemonades? Customers can order them at any drive-thru starting June 2, but in-the-know app members gain early access on May 27.

“At Sonic, bold flavor is what we do best — and that includes adding a new spin to the classics,” Mackenzie Gibson, vice president of culinary and menu innovation at Sonic, tells Food & Wine. “While other brands are just entering the lemonade game, we’ve been perfecting it for years. Sweet Topped Lemonades are another way our guests can customize their drink and make every sip their own.”

The lineup packs in “main character energy,” as Sonic quips in today’s press release — a tall order for a lemonade, but the chain assures that a high-profile partnership can support that claim. Three buzzy authors are collaborating with Sonic to launch the lemonade collection: Christina Lauren, Abby Jimenez, and Ashley Poston are all joining the chain for the drink’s lineup.

Sonic’s latest drink collab doesn’t just bring flavor — it brings a plot twist. Romance authors Christina Lauren, Abby Jimenez, and Ashley Poston are backing the new lemonades with a splash of heart.

“I write stories that make you laugh, cry, and maybe believe in love again — Sweet Topped Lemonades may make you feel that way too,” Jimenez, who penned Say You’ll Remember Me, promises in the release.

The Oklahoma City-based chain is simultaneously reaffirming its commitment to literacy through its Limeades for Learning initiative. It is partnering with First Book, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that provides educational resources for children from all backgrounds. The organization collaborates with public and private sponsors to identify areas of need and effectively serve those underrepresented groups, according to the mission statement.

Sonic already contributes a portion of all drink, slush, blast, and milkshake sales to education through the Sonic Foundation and Limeades for Learning program. The company says it has contributed more than $30 million to public education in the last 16 years.

A sweet, summery drink that tastes good and does good? You don’t have to tell us twice.
