Mariah Carey Baking Christmas Cookies Will Get You in the Holiday Spirit

It’s November 29, and Mariah Carey is in the mood to make some Christmas cookies. Her personal holiday season officially starts on the Friday after Thanksgiving—that day, she explains, is when she really starts blasting “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

Okay, she’ll occasionally sneak in some streams a little earlier in the season. But the clock has to hit November before she posts her now highly-anticipated (and highly produced) video on social media that shows her ditching a Halloween costume for festive wear. “Before that, I would always wait until Thanksgiving,” she admits. Not that she minds it being played any time—once, she recalls, a couple came up to her and said they still listen to the song in July. “It depends! Some people want to start a little bit earlier,” she says.

Speaking of what people want for Christmas: What is the best holiday gift she’s ever received? “Diamonds—I’ve gotta say. Didn’t want to say that aloud. But I had to!” Carey says, laughing. The singer also talks about a highlight of her 2024: her three dogs, Cha Cha, Jill E., and Mutley, being photographed for Vogue as part of our “Dogue Days of Summer” series. “I got them little outfits and ensembles and it was so cute and fun,” she says.

Below, watch Carey make sugar cookies—for which she whips out sprinkles from a mini Louis Vuitton bag, naturally—and hot chocolate as she kicks off her festive 20-city tour, Mariah Carey’s Christmas Time.
