The House returned to the floor Wednesday night after several hours in a holding pattern while GOP leaders leaned on Republican holdouts to allow President Trump's “big, beautiful bill” to advance.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Trump spent much of the day trying to win over deficit hawks in the House Freedom Caucus and beyond who have threatened to block the bill and grind floor action to a halt.
Around 9:20 p.m., Trump said in a social media post that the House was headed back for a vote on the rule, which will open debate on the Senate's version of the policy bill.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) had said earlier in the evening that the large group of deficit hawks who had been huddling off the House floor are working to understand some Senate changes, how they would be implemented, what kind of executive actions the Trump administration can take, and the possibility of sending any tweaks back to the Senate.
