Kansas City barbecue restaurant will expand again with a 4th location. Here’s where

Q39 is expanding — again.

The competition-style barbecue restaurant will open its fourth location late next year in Lee’s Summit, its owners said in a release.

It will be part of Oldham Village, an upcoming mixed-use development off Oldham Parkway, southwest of Missouri Route 291 and U.S Highway 50. Much of the site was formerly Adesa, a car auction facility.

“(The Lee’s Summit) Q39 will have a full-size kitchen specially designed to accommodate dine-in, a robust carry-out business, and large-scale catering,” the release states. “There are also plans for a large outdoor seating area.”

The news follows Q39’s announcement in February that it would open a Lawrence location at Press Yards, a redevelopment project at the site of the former Lawrence Journal-World printing plant. That’s still on track to open later this year.

After participating in barbecue competitions for more than a decade, Rob Magee opened the first Q39 in 2014 in midtown Kansas City at 1000 W. 39th St., following it up with an Overland Park location at 11051 Antioch Road. Magee died from cancer in 2021. The restaurants are now owned by his wife, Kelly, with chef Philip Thompson as culinary lead.
